Support for Binaural
I have been listening to nothing but PJ since before the MSGII show and I've discovered how much I really really like Binaural.
I always liked Breakerfall, Grievance (espcially Grievance when played live), Light Years & Thin Air, but I somehow missed how great these songs are!
Of The Girl
Insignificance
Sleight of Hand
Parting Ways
Does anyone else agree?
What is all the dead space at the end of Parting Ways (the song is 7:14 long)? Is it there for a reason?

Great album, one of my favorites. After parting ways is the hidden track, writer's block. It's just a typewriter sound for a little while.
Glad you're enjoying it, I always do

I love Binaural. It's the album that really made me into a fan. I didn't like Sleight of Hand until I heard a live recording of it in late 2000 but it's definitely an amazing song. Of the Girl is one of my fav Pearl Jam songs. The only song that never grew on me is Evacuation.
There is a hidden track (if you can call it that) at the end of the Parting Ways deadspace called "Writer's Block." It is the sound of a typewriter for a few seconds.2003: San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Seattle; 2005: Monterrey; 2006: Chicago 1 & 2, Grand Rapids, Cleveland, Detroit; 2008: West Palm Beach, Tampa; 2009: Austin, LA 3 & 4, San Diego; 2010: Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbus, Indianapolis; 2011: PJ20 1 & 2; 2012: Missoula; 2013: Dallas, Oklahoma City, Seattle; 2014: Tulsa; 2016: Columbia, New York City 1 & 2; 2018: London, Seattle 1 & 2; 2021: Ohana; 2022: Oklahoma City0 -

I absolutely adore Binaural! When I heard Yield I thought PJ had gone a bit radio friendly and would never make another album like this but 2 years later it came and it's almost perfect! I hate the fact they used the dead space for Writers Block when Fatal was going spare but that doesn't detract from the albums quality. Insignificance, Breakerfall and Of The Girl are PJ perfection.

Love binaural, I always come back to it. far superior to it's successors riot act and very safe very average avocado.
I remember listening to it for the first time on release and not particularly liking the production, but it soon began to make sense. Great songs, great vibe. As many others agree, it was a mistake to leave Fatal off this album instead evacuation which shouldn't even qualify for lost dogs. Sad should have gone on it as well, what where they thinking?? Perhaps instead of gods dice? It's a very good and original album, but it couldve been great.

Of the Girl is such a great opener for shows, such a cool jam0

for those who are not aware, only a few songs are actually recorded using the binaural technique apparantly, which are:
Nothing as it seems
of the girl
rival
sleight of hand
soon forget
Binaural recordings are intended to be listened to with headphones as you will not experience the atmospheric effects of binaural recordings played over a loudspeaker. They sound best with headphones.
does anyone know to what extend they recorded these songs binaurally? Was it just the vocals or certain instruments. It seems guitars are binaural to me. Clearly the dog at the begining of rival has one of those microphones heads in it's mouth.
Also, the band were not fully happy with tchad blakes original mixing of the album and gave about half the songs to Brendan obrien to remix. I actually prefer tchads stuff though. I would love to hear the original mixes of such songs like breakerfall etc.London 29-10-96, London 29/30-5-00, London 20-4-06, Reading 27-8-06, London 18-6-07, London 11-8-09, London 18-8-09, London 25-6-10, Berlin 30-6-10 / PJ20 3/4-9-11, Manchester 20-6-12, Amsterdam 26/27-6-12, EV-London 30/31-7-12, EV-Orlando 27-11-120 -
Not sure if it's been disscused or concluded in the past but I think "writers block" is just a little joke at the end of the book and the hidden track itself is a machine gun shooting and reloading a few time in some sort of enclosed shooting range which gives off an echo which would make the "ringing" noise someone mentioned, theres also no way if it is a typwriter that it hits as many letters that is in the book.0

Binaural is an amazing record. Amazing. And Lights Years is one of my favorite songs ever, by anyone. I made it to Hartford and Boston this tour and didn't get much Binaural, but they did play Rival in Boston. That was a highlight for me. Still holding out hope to hear Light Years one day."Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them." - Thoreau

Absolutely love this album!
Funny- recently it just hit me how incredible the album really is (even if there is one dud
), and I've been listening to it in it's entirety quite a few times. From front to back, incredible songs!
Putting on headphones, just laying in bed, and playing Parting Ways loudly- such a serene moment!"Sometimes you find yourself having to put all your faith in no faith."

Love, love this album! Such an underrated album. Favorites of mine: Light Years, NAIS, Grievance, Sleight of Hand, Parting Ways. Light Years and NAIS have some of the best lyrics I've heard (thanks Jeff for NAIS).
Seems like tonight I'll have to listen to this with headphones on.
When I first tried to play this song on drums, I said, "Fuck Matt! I have to practice these a lot!" Matt is just great on this album.Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford
