Can anyone please enlighten me, does it apply to minor criminal offences?

No. For a conviction to be considered a first strike it has to be a serious or a violent felony. Once someone has a strike on their record another lesser felony conviction can be considered a strike. If it is just minor stuff, there is nothing to be worried about.

This is in California. Not sure about other states or countries.
