Um.... Definitely Philly, I mean, the set lists, the atmosphere, everything about those shows were just unreal. I'm glad they're on CD-Rs, makes it feel more authentic. I know the Gorge shows were pretty good, but everything about the Philly shows and what they stand for puts them in the record books as some of the best shows in PJ history. Take it from a 10c member who joined last year just for the Philly shows, or I mean, I didnt actually go to the Philly shows, my friend did... but he told me you all had to be there to understand. And I stand for all the other 10c members who joined the 10c specifically to be apart of the Philly Phenomenon that these shows will always be better then any other show they have ever played in the history the band.
Good thread. It's sorta like the comparison between Showbox dvd and MSG dvd though. Both have their good points. But ultimately: which one can you buy at stores everywhere...and which one can you only buy on the band's website. that says something right there i think.
The quality of the gorge set is fantastic. Everything is glossy. They aren't CD-R's. Price was only like $35 I think? Much better set.

I don't see any possible way anyone can defend Philly as being better, either as a performance or as an overall product, let alone it being "easily" better.
Was at the first Philly show, so I'm kind of biased to that one. But overall, I thought Philly was a little underwhelming (perhaps from all the hype and delayed release). Also enjoyed night 4 much more than night 3 which kind of goes against the grain a little.
The 9/1/05 show easily blows away any of the Philly shows. Then on the July 06 shows you get absolutely stellar setlists for both shows. Philly was great, don't get me wrong......but the Gorge wins this battle.
I was at the 2 shows @ the gorge in 06 and all 4 @ the spectrum, Imo, the spectrum s setlists were no doubt better (with the exception of daughter/it's ok) but there is nothing like the atmosphere of the gorge, it's almost a religious experience.
Small my table, seats just 3, its not crowded, its just lucky me

But really, there is no comparing The Gorge for atmosphere - trust me, it will win every damn time. You clearly were not around during the two years of Gorge shows in 05 and 06, nor do i think you have heard the boots or ever been to the venue. You wouldn't have understated the Gorge shows as "pretty good." Holy shit batman, they were fucking spectacular!

The debate's not about atmosphere...but if you want to make it about that, the gorge as nice as it may be, can't hold a candle to the closing of one of the most historic buildings in the history of sports and music. You apparently didn't attend the Philly Shows. But I understand...it's natural to pick the shows you attended over those you didn't.
Funny how you knock Pearl James for allegedly not listening to the Gorge Boots...yet you yourself haven't heard the Philly boots...by your own admission. That my friend is laughable.
I Know All The Rules But The Rules Do Not Know Me.
Are you people really going to compare that? the question didn't ask better shows it asked better boxset, pretend you wern't at either show and that you could only have one of the 2.
As far as what shows I would prefer to have been at I'd take gorge, like someone said philly seemed a little like they HAD to play so many songs where as the gorge was just playing for fun for your hometown (or close to it).
the gorge as nice as it may be, can't hold a candle to the closing of one of the most historic buildings in the history of sports and music.
One is a man made structure, the other is all mother nature. Apples and oranges really. Like you already stated, this is about the boxset, not about the venue or atmosphere.

I knocked Pearl James for casting a vote when he clearly wasn't around for the Gorge shows, or the Gorge boxset. You see, again, I didn't vote because i have not heard both boxsets. He also hasn't heard both, but voted anyways. On that logic, (forgive me for using logic) you should be more up in arms at Pearl James than you are at me.
As far as the product goes, the Gorge wins. Better sounding, silver cds, better packaging, for almost half the price.
As far as the shows go, I'm biased to the Gorge since I was at all the shows. The 2006 shows feature tight playing with killer set lists.
The Philly shows seem to be like the 2005 Gorge show, a little sloppy in places, but the vibe of the shows make up for a few minor mistakes here and there.
I would have to say the Gorge shows by a mile! The band was way tighter and all around better sound quality. In my opinion there is nothing better than seeing Pearl Jam at the Gorge,it's magical! 2nd night in 06 is the best show I've ever seen in my life.

I think Pearl James was just poking fun at all the Philly worshippers who are relentless in defending those shows, and at how this band had 19 years of incredible performances before those shows that don't seem to exist anymore in these said worshippers' closed minds. No way he is being serious.
The Gorge wins this battle with ease.

it's gotta be Gorge. The '06 shows were titght with solid setlists. Philly had cool setlists but Ed's voice was kind of gone and there were tons of fuck ups. Gorge '05 is sloppy with a cool setlist too, but the other two shows make up for it.
"What can you expect when you're on top? You know? It's like Napoleon. When he was the king, you know, people were just constantly trying to conquer him, you know, in the Roman Empire. So, it's history repeating itself all over again."
I wasn't at the Philly shows. I was at the three gorge shows.
As a Pearl Jam fan, you read about those shows, the ones that are extra long, or have an opening acoustic set. The ones the band goes the extra mile. I'd never seen one of those shows until the Gorge 05. That show was phenomenal. The setlist was insane, laced with so many b-sides and covers. The band was on fire, the crowd was in fire. The gorge is probably the best venue in the United States (allthough I've never been to red rocks and would love to see a show there). I can't see how anyone would knock the 05 gorge show as one of Pearl Jam's all time best. The 06 shows were pretty good too, but not at the 05 level. Not to mention it was over 110 degrees at the '06 shows... I showed up early to get posters, and was pretty burned out by the time PJ hit the stage.. lol. But com'on they played Dirty Frank .
As for just based on the boxsets. I like the sound of the 05 boots better. The boxset itself seems a little more professional. And they're silver pressed CD's. I think the Gorge set wins just based on the music and quality of the boxset.

Still have to listen to Philly 4, but I gotta agree with this. The quality of the Gorge set is a lot better.
