We've had 2 field mice, a couple of squirrels and a hedgehog. How's that for nature watching.

All I ever seem to see is pheasants. :P

I can hear 'em too.

    1 turtle crossing
    many anoles sneekin and peekin
    3 Downy woodpeckers pecking
    2 Bluejays bobbing
    3 robins laughing
1 red bellied woodpecker furiously feeding baby
    2 Doves cooing
1 ruby throat hummingbird dipping at the flowers

This list would make a great x-mas song if it included a partridge in a pear tree.

Well I'm over on the island for a couple days (Vancouver island)
Theyre aren't many wild animals in greater vancouver, except the usual raccoons, squirrels, bunnies, etc. There was a possum in my backyard the other day but that was about it.
Expected tho as thats a huge metro area... the rest of B.C. is more of a cluster of smaller towns - especially as you go up past 100 mile house or boston bar.

I really wanted to see some orcas tho ...none showed up

if i could live there i would.
    vancouver island is the best.
i can't even go into my own wonderous experiences there because it would take up a great deal of time.
pacific rim rainforest inspired me to move across the united states
to live in the u.s.'s version of the rainforest, the olympics.

pacific rim rainforest contains artwork, wizards, and me higher than a kite.
off in the distance i saw spouts from gray whales as i sat and watched
the proudest eagle i have ever saw in my life.
on the edge of this cliff, he sat atop a conifer tree of some sort overlooking the ocean.
waves crashing below swirling around in this pool made from rock erosion.
i sat there for a good 2 hours im sure of it.
i did not move unless i was blinking my eyes, smoking joints, or drinking water.
i did not speak a single word the entire time yet had a conversation with a winged preditor.
    massive was his chest.
eyes of sky focusing down to a fish's reflective fins.
    talons kind to the tree.
i had no choice but to light another doobie and take in his amazement.

Do orcas ever swim closer to Vancouver? I know we get them around Puget Sound, though I've yet to be fortunate enough to see them.

Also, do bears ever wander down into your metro area? I haven't seen a bear since taking a family trip into the Okanogans, but they're spotted in Western Washington's (sub)urban areas fairly often.

    Today, I saw ...

3 or 4 strung out, missing teeth prostitutes.
    1 drug deal going down.
5 fire engines for the 4th false alarm in the past two weeks.

oh, and if I could convey the smells I smelled ... you'd be fascinated.

you don't see orcas in the vancouver area more so in victoria (which is nearer to puget sound anyways, isn't it?) although a grey whale swam into false creek a few weeks ago which is crazy!

bears aren't too common although there are a few that have been spotted here and there in greater vancouver, more so outside the borders of vancouver/burnaby (the really heavily populated metro areas). unfortunately people aren't really "bear aware" and a lot of bears get killed by conservation officers as a result. (ie they feed the bears or don't cover their garbage properly and such).

I saw a squirrel eating french fries from a discarded Mickey D's bag yesterday. Made me laugh out loud. My first thought was "what would his mother think?". :D

I got two Turkey Vultures....a red-tailed hawk....some Barn Swallows.....for today. Yesterday, I had over 42 species of birds.....the species of note were Lark Sparrow and White Pelican......several upland chorus frogs were added to the mix too. The only mammal to make an appearance was an Eastern Gray Squirrel.
