The first quotation is not racist and was the type of thing I was under the impression he said, the second quotation is blatantly racist. Perhaps using Rocker as an example was a blunder, I only saw his fellow players coming to his rescue and what was in the media at the time. The point I am trying to make is that by labeling certain comments as racist actually does more harm as it detracts from the real issue. Many people born into poverty never get educated and they in turn have children who grow up not understanding basic things that our parents taught us. I spent a number of years down in South Texas and the state of the immigrants personal hygiene is very poor, rest rooms, restaurants, etc, so for making this comment I could be labeled a racist and that would take the focus away from the real issue, people are walking on egg shells when it comes to this subject and the answer lies in education.
but i think you hit onto something though. people like rocker who grow up in a "racist" household see that growing up and think that's the right way to be an act. plus i think rocker had other problems besides growing up in a "racist" household. no you aren't racist at all by the comment you made. if people have poor hygiene then they have poor hygiene. it wouldn't make a difference what race they are. they coulda been white or asian.

one of the reasons is fear. and we all know that fear is the path to the dark side.

fear leads to anger. anger leads to hate. hate leads to suffering.

simple question....is the term "redneck" a racist term?

or does an additional adjective need to be inserted before redneck..."stupid redneck, dumb redneck", in order for it to be a racist statement?
live and let live...unless it violates the pearligious doctrine.

Depends on how it's used. I usually see it used in an ignorant, inappropriate way, as racial slurs are used. Though I haven't thought of it as racist since it seems to me to be a reference to people in the South. How about "southernist" - is that a word?

Its the psych of being diffrient than someone or something else, its almost like a defense mechanism. But these day you can't say anything with out beining labeled a racisit. I think thats more of an issue than racisim its self.

"I am a redneck myself, born and bred on a submarginal farm in Appalachia, descended from an endless line of dark-complected, lug-eared, beetle-browed, insolent barbarian peasants, a line reaching back to the dark forests of central Europe and the alpine caves of my Neanderthal primogenitors." -mr. abbey

i may not be from the south or the hollers.........but i am ok with being a redneck.

Not just the south but I think it refers to any rural area.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but good point.

the most common American usage, referring to the poor rural white Southerner, is probably derived from individuals having a red neck caused by working outdoors in the hot sun. A citation from 1893 provides a definition as "poorer inhabitants of the rural districts...men who work in the field, as a matter of course, generally have their skin burned red by the sun, and especially is this true of the back of their necks".
I think and have seen that the term Redneck is endearing mostly. They are a proud people, Southerners.
