Tinnitus - Ringing in the ears - anyone else suffering?

Just wondering if anyone else here is suffering from Tinnitus - the ringing in the ears. And I'm not referring to the one you get after a concert which disappears after a while. This one is the constant buzz or ringing in the ears. I never really paid much attention to it before, but it's getting to be such a freakin' nuisance lately, especially when it's quiet. I just put on my headphones and listen to music to 'mask' it. Considering most of us here listen to loud music, I thought that maybe someone has or had this condition but has managed to find a cure or relief at least. I've done some researching and it all points to one thing - that there's no cure for this. I've gone to a hearing clinic, and they've suggested that I use a hearing aid that produces a sound to 'mask' it, well I thought. if that's the case I would rather just listen to music then.... Anyone else here who have the same plight?

I noticed after gigs I had bad ringing in my ears so I finally decided to buy some plugs. Also I noticed over the past year or two that purely randomly I would get the ringing. I don't get the ringing as I wear plugs now but I went to see Rage Against The Machine last night and forgot them and the ringing came back after, the cranked the volume up for Killing In The Name :D I'm only 20 so yeah I better look after myself.

I have some. Now I always wear earplugs, even if I pull them halfway out during the show. Etymotic Research makes good reusable ones.

I learned my lesson after three concerts (Average 6 months apart) without them. I have no damage as far as I can tell, but after not being able to hear without he ringing in my ears for a week after the third concert, I decided I'd never go to another concert without plugs again. I want to be able to enjoy music well into my old age. I do randomly get a bit of ringing every now and again, though, but it only lasts a few seconds.
    Thanks EPOTTSIII!

I have ringing in my ears. Have for a long time. It seems to get worse around allergy season, like now.

My left ear seems to be pretty well fucked after the Philly shows. It gets a lot of distortion. You might think I learned my lesson and have started wearing ear plugs. Well, I did start to wear ear plugs, but I take them out pretty quickly.
Are there any ear plugs out there that don't muffle the sound so badly? I started to wear a cheapo pair at MSG, but I could hear myself sing way too much. That will not do. ;)

I've has tinnitus in my left ear since I fractured my skull on the left side in 1996. They say it might be something to do with the tiny little bones that are in your ear being a bit squewiff after the accident & would porobably do more damage than good to try & do something about it. I don't notice the tinnitus too often. I'm also deaf to high tones in that ear which can be very handy - something squeaking when I've gone to be for example I can just lie on my good ear & cant hear it. JM2cW. :D

Had it for over 10 years. I don't notice it much anymore ... only if I'm having trouble getting to sleep then once I notice it I can't seem to not focus on it  ... I usually play music or have the tv on when I'm going to sleep. You can get pillows that you can plug your mp3 player into.

I ALWAYS wear earplugs to gigs now. I don't want the tinnitus to get any worse.

So I guess although it can't be cured ... I can give you some hope in that you do get used to it

Have had it for many years now. My father had it and my brother has it as well. Haven't kept up with the research but I don't think there's a cure yet. You just seem to learn to live with it. Wish I had better news for you.

I think I'm headed for the Pete Townsend zone... First concert was age 13 or so (now 47) and been to many hundreds since, not to mention seeing many bands in many bars...

Hey somebody pick up that phone, huh?

Anyway... Had front row for Def Lep, Posion and Cheap Trick last summer (yeah, I know, what-ever)and when I got home I tried to watch TV and I turned it up to 40 on the volume control and still could not hear the TV... But the hearing was there in the morning... But a slight ringing all the time for as long as I can recall...

While we're at it, what's the loudest show you've ever been to?

Metallica was loud as in thumping on the chest, but I saw George Thorogood back in the day and was seated opposite the PA and that hurt for like three days.

Also saw a bar band in a place called Hammerheads in Babylon on Long Island (boy that dates me-Good Rats, Twister Sister and Zebra used to play there quite often) where the synthisizer was so loud I felt my eardrums flex inward... People were standing and watching with their fingers in their ears...

Are there any ear plugs out there that don't muffle the sound so badly? I started to wear a cheapo pair at MSG, but I could hear myself sing way too much. That will not do. ;)

The company I mentioned above, Etymotic Research:

    http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er20.aspx

They reduce the db level, but you still get all the frequencies. $12 per pair, reusable - I get a few new pairs a year.

I have it too and it is only noticeable to me now when I try to sleep. Buy a white noise machine and u will notice a huge difference in being able to sleep.

I have it come and go rarely.
Used to get it more often in the right ear, noticeable when it's dead quiet or in bed.
But since I've had a procedure done I think it's gone.
I wear plugs every concert now and no longer get that ringing afterwards.
I'd rather look like a dork and wear them so I can enjoy sound for life.

I've never gone anywhere to have my ears checked but I do have ringing all the time. It only really bothers me when it's quiet, which is why I fall asleep with the TV on

I've had it for the last five years or so. At first it was a really annoying, but either I've gotten used to it or it's not as bad as it used to be. The only time I really notice it is at night, but then I often have a fan on - any white noise is good for blocking it out. If I'm going to any indoor gigs I always wear ear plugs, I've given up using them at outdoor shows like festivals, and it doesn't seem to have gotten any worse.

I've had it for as long as I can remember. Funny enough, I didn't really think anything of it until a few years back. I thought it was just something everybody experienced.

I remember reading a few months back that doctors had found some success treating tinnitus with anti-seizure medication although I can't seem to find it anywhere now.

I have posted many times about my ringing. Years ago, it would be one long, scary tone in one ear. Now, it won't go away, a constant hissing, high pitched ring. I'm supposed to be on a salt free diet, which is very hard.
I went to a specialist and I even had motion tests as I am light headed in addition to sensorineural hearing loss

check it out, this is what I have, like many people have:

I think ringing in the ears can happen with high blood pressure and diabetes.

to the OP, have you had a physical in the past few years?

my problem has been blamed on concerts, I still go and I wear earplugs and I hear the ring during shows.

tinnitus can also be caused by TMJ. I have that very badly too.

Yeah, I'd just had a physical done and aside from not getting enough sleep, I'm perfectly healthy. Maybe if I try cutting down on salty food, that might help. I did go for the hearing test and they wanted me to wear a hearing aid. Having second thoughts as I think it might feel (and hear) unnatural. I don't know.. maybe if try it, I might get the hang of it...

I'm really interested in this procedure that was done to you...How was it? Where did you go? and most importantly (if you don't mind answering), how much did it cost you?

I am so used to the ringing in my ears I forget about it. I've had it for so long I've forgotton what silence sounds like. Mine sounds kinda like a fridge humming. My fathers side of the family all have hearing problems and start to loose their hearing slowly from about 40 so looks like the volume dial is just going to keep going up.

I also have problems with hearing things from certain angles like if someone speaks to me from behind or when there are too many different noises at once like the TV on the kids playing and the partner speaking, everything all just blends together

So back in mid April one night i was watching tv and heard this weird sound by my ear. I didn't feel or see anything though but I could definitely hear it. It only happened a few times and lasted a few seconds so didn't really think anything of it.

Then a few nights later I woke up, laid in bed for awhile. Decided to get up and out to feed my cat and giver her her insulin. Took a few steps then started to black out. Grabbed onto a a door frame,my left foot gave way and i fell flat on my face onto the carpeted floor. Laid there for a few seconds then i realized my nose was bleed profusely. Gathered my senses and went to the bathroom to stop the bleeding and tried to clean my carpet. Nice rug burn on my face if that's possible.  Some people thought it was vertigo, low blood sugar or just getting out of bed too soon (which i felt it was since I never had vertigo and my blood sugar i thought was good and I never had that happen to me before.

Few days after that incident I recalled the weird sound i heard by my ear and thought they could be related. I thought it actually might be a bug.

Then a few weeks ago my ears started ringing non-stop. Hoping it would go away they didn't. Thought it all tied in together and honestly thought there was a bug in my ear. It wasn't too bad but noticeable especially if there wasn't any sound around.

Yesterday went to the doctors to have them check it out. Luckily it was mainly just wax build up in deep down my ears. I do clean them with q-tips but mainly just the outside cause don't want to damage my ear drum or anything. She suggested to take some ibuprofen for the pain and if it doesn't get better see an ear nose throat doctor next week. It's gone down some but it's still there.

I did google them and there are exercises for it on youtube to treat it. will have to check them out later.

I'm glad that you went to get that checked out.

    Tinnitus here. 🖐

I believe it started when I had a terrible ear infection and a bulge on my eardrum when I was in the 6th grade. Plenty of years of concerts minus earplugs added to it. (I wear them now.) So loud that I keep the TV on at night to sleep.

It's something I have had most of my life, but it is a huge annoyance.

I got it from a very bad sinus infection that eventually spread to my inner ear.  I believe this was around my junior or senior year in college. For the first couple years, I could never seem to shake my focus away from it.  I heard it ALL the time.  The worst was sleeping, which began my routine of using white noise like fans and air conditioners to drown out the sound.  Even then I had trouble.  I'm 43 now, have dealt with it for basically half my life and don't really notice it much anymore except in really quiet situations.  It's still there, and if I concentrate on it, it gets amplified, but I'm at least able to not let it bother me most of the time.

Like many here, I'm sure the years of concerts with no ear protection haven't done my eardrums any favors.

yeah guess years of concerts hasn't helped me either. I Should invest in some earplugs for future shows i guess.

I’ve had tinnitus for 2 years now. Never took enough care obviously.
I’ve bought earplugs and headphones for the tour. I can’t mess my ears up even more.
