Rank Your IRISH Pearl Jam Gigs...

With the the number of Irish posters on this board and the Dublin/Belfast 1-2 fast approaching I thought it’d be fun to see how those who have gone to any of their previous gigs here rank and remember them. We’ve never had particularly long or unusual setlists but they’ve all been special nights for anyone there.

I find it hard to rank them to be honest (I could juggle the top 3 around) but will have a go and would love to hear some others memories as mine get more faded ;) . I have the available bootlegs but I’m comparing the gigs rather than the bootlegs, if that makes any sense! I missed the one in Cork in 96 so I’ll have a bash at the other 4:

1. Point ‘96

Probably the best gig I’ve ever been to. And in the Point, who would’ve thunk it! Looking at the setlist, after Release for openers there’s very little let up in pace which is pretty much how I remember it. While I do dig the more recent albums I’m a bit nostalgic for this period where every song I loved as much as the last (I can’t honestly say about a lot of the stuff from, say, the last 2 albums).

I don’t think I’ve ever been so blown away by any run of songs at a gig as when they did Immortality->Alive->Blood to end the main set and then Who You Are->Better Man->SOLAT to start the 1st encore. I couldn’t stop talking about this gig for AGES and still get a smile just thinking about it.

2. Slane ‘93

You never forget your first time. ;)
Pretty short gig (supporting Neil Young) but just incredible atmosphere and performance. Van Morrison (I think) played beforehand and once he finished all the PJ fans pushed up really fast in anticipation of the boys - it was hot and sweaty long before they even came on :) . I remember thinking the new songs sounded great before the place would go completely bananas for the Ten songs. I was convinced Eddie was looking me in the eye while singing one of the choruses to Alive which was such a buzz as a 17 year old (who am I kidding – it’d still be a buzz as a thirty-something!). Hadn’t heard Baba O’Riley before but loved it straight away; whenever I hear it now it brings me straight back to that day. There was a great write-up of it in one of their Rolling Stone cover articles shortly afterwards.

3. Point ‘00

Hard to separate this from the 96 gig – I know coming away from it I thought it was as good, but I think with time I just remember 96 slightly more fondly. It was my birthday the following day so I may have had a drink or two ;) . I’ve a really vivid memory of going nuts while the opening riff of Sometimes kicked in – for me, it edges even Release as an opener. Loved Wishlist too, I know some people don’t but I’d love to see it again this year. The atmosphere was just incredible again.

4. Point ‘06

I had a great time at this gig and it’s highpoints were as good as the others but overall I don’t think it compared to the previous ones. For me, some of the S/T material didn’t work so well, especially Inside Job as opener and Gone in the middle of the set. As I say it did have some great moments though - the singalong for It’s OK was lovely and a storming RVM to finish the main set was really great. On the night I really enjoyed the gig – PJ on even an average night will do that - but it didn’t stay with me for nearly as long afterwards as the others.

Sorry if this has been done before – I’m a bit of an infrequent reader and poster here! Would love to hear what others thought about these gigs, and the Cork one which I’ve never heard much about.

Wow you didnt like inside job as the opener?.....I must admit i wasnt at the show and downloaded and listened to it because I'm going to the one in 3 weeks and i got chills listening to it....it was no release or any other standard opener but the instrumental opening is magic :D

I remember the band coming on, opening with release and the whole place turned purple blue and I just melted into the crowd

  • If any kind kind soul could grab me an "Ireland Only" tee (if one exists) from the upcoming Dublin show, I would be eternally grateful!!

I am American, but nearly 100% Irish, by descent... and would really covet two of my favorite things ever (Pearl Jam, and being Irish) being combined into one entity! I always thought that Ireland poster w/ the leprechaun was one of the best PJ gig posters ever.

Enjoy the show - you lucky European bastards!!!

Being American, I've only been to The Point in 2000, but it was remarkable. The crowd was unbelievable with chants during breaks. We met some kids from Belfast who were at their first PJ show, and every few songs they'd come running up to us from wherever they were with the biggest smiles possible and tell us how effing amazing the show was.

And oh yeah, Eddie stage dove DURING BLACK OF ALL SONGS! That's tough to top.

Kudos Ireland that this is even a discussion. Because my one experience (I've seen them 35 times) was as much fun as I've ever had at a Pearl Jam show. And I was at the 10th anniversary show in Vegas. You people are top-notch. Be proud!

I guess I'm just not mad about that song and when I heard it kicking off I was a little disappointed. It did go down well though, the place erupted as per usual. :)

17 years ago today - Slane Castle !!!! wot a great day !! (apart from 4non blondes) 4 hr on the bus from Sinnots, great day, ,got the Official tshirt, 'crayons not guns' (still wear it) ;)

Millstreet , cork 96, bought my first car the week before and drove the 100 miles to it !! Crazy gig in a cow shed :)

The point 96 (3 days later) once again drove in my new aquired 15 yr old red renault 5! I could only get a seated ticket, and thought that i would still be allowed onto the floor, but NO !!! damn you Point security (in the main, the most ignorant self important people you will ever meet), so i had a great view of the boys rocking the point!!

The Point 2000 - i had a spare ticket so brought my little bro, who was doing his junior cert exams the next day!! Super gig (eddies dive during Black ) apart from the Americans that spent the whole gig roaring "WHOOO" thru the set!!! :x

The Point 2006 - Amazing gig- atmosphere electric!!! Even after Paddy Casey opened for pj !!!! Wot the hell was that about !!!! P.J Lifted the roof of that old building that night!!

02 2010 - Great gig, but not spectacular.... :? just felt there was something missing... but there was some geat bootleg tshirts outside!!! and i got a tour scarf for a E5 !!!! :D home at 2.45am...

Hyde PArk 2010- Massive crowd and another great performance.. Got up to 3 rows from the front... Wot a festival of sweat !!!!

How long before we see them again ??
