If this is considered hijacking, I apologize...but I've been really wanting to listen to some REM lately, but they have a large catalog and I'd like to know a place to start.

    Suggestions?

I'm not normally one for "best ofs" but I would recommend picking up And I Feel Fine: The Best of the IRS Years. I've been a huge REM fan for many years, and was brought up with their music from Green onwards. I picked up this album about 3 years ago as I never really heard much of their earlier stuff, but it's a great introduction. I think there are 21 songs, and if you like a lot of them, I would recommend picking up some of the earlier albums (my favourites are Life's Rich Pageant and Document). I'm suggesting this as i'm sure you're more familiar with their later stuff than ealier.

I see REM in the 80s and REM after that period as being a different band really, as they don't sound much alike to me, but I love both periods. They have always been, and continue to be, one of my favourite bands, and one of the best live bands I have seen.

So I'm curious, what does R.E.M. stand for? :geek:

Or is it a meaningless acronym?

Rapid Eye Movement, as in REM sleep. I'm fairly certain it has the same meaning. Unless anyone else has any better ideas?

Correct-a-mundo! I thought it was maybe too geeky to be that but I remember Michael Stipe talking about it in an interview and they are geeks so they're allowed a geeky name. Still the 3rd coolest band on the planet too.... :D By the way Audiodave, is that a photo of Josh Homme in your avatar or do you just really look like him? Or are you him? :D

Yeah i've heard an interview saying something to the same effect.

And no that's a really small, grainy photo of me. I don't look a damn thing like him, in fact the only resemblance would be the hair colour

It is indeed, though I doubt we're talking about the same town :P They're recording a new album at the moment, so I think it's on the cards!

Hopefully when they do tour it'll be a good mix of new and older material like it was last time I saw them :D

Last time was 05 for me at Loch Lomond and it was greatest hits + some Around The Sun stuff but we did get I Took Your Name, Star 69, Find The River and the then unreleased I'm Gonna DJ. Great gig but had to endure Feeder beforehand.

Yeah I saw them on that tour too. I didn't really know much more than the greatest hits at that point. They played So Fast So Numb and I didn't know it, then when I saw them in 2008, I wanted them to play it!

They busted out Exhuming McCarthy and a couple of other older tracks that I can't remember in 2008. They are one of the best and most fun bands i've seen live. They just seem to love performing, and Michael has such a good stage presence.

Yeah he's pretty mesmerising indeed. I saw a photo of the band in rehearsals prior to the 08 tour with lists of the songs they were trying and nearly every song from the first 6 albums was on it along with about 100 others! The Live At Olympia album made me sick and happy at the same time.. I'd love to see them play Disturbance At Heron House or West Of The Fields. So Fast So Numb is a rocking great song. The version on Perfect Square is the best I've heard.

The band posted this on their web site on April 1st:

    http://remhq.com/news_story.php?id=1141

R.E.M. CHANGES NAME: NOW TO BE KNOWN AS REM

In a move they have considered since their earliest days, R.E.M. today announced from their Headquarters in Athens, GA, that they have finally decided to change their name to, simply, REM.

"This has been a long time in the making," noted singer Michael Stipe, "and I am glad we finally made this decision together, which is truly the only way forward." Mike Mills chimed in that, "The British press has been writing about REM forever, and we figured if you can't beat 'em, drop 'em" [the periods-- Ed Note]. "Yeah," Peter Buck added, "with the whole digital thing in the past few years, we were finding people referring to us as 'R dot E dot M dot,' which doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, you know." The announcement comes on the eve of the band's thirty years together, and some in Athens have opined that perhaps this impending anniversary milestone has perhaps made the band focus on what's really important, like whether periods/dots/full-stops have any place in their official brand.

No word as to the position on this space-shifting announcement from the band's erstwhile drummer Bill Berry, who at Press Release time was not answering the special party line installed on his farm outside Athens.

And strangely, there has been no comment from the band's manager, B.E.D. 4th, but some attribute this to his ongoing negotiations with members of the band's French and Italian fan clubs, who have insisted on continuing to call the beloved combo "Eh-rem!" which has driven the band nuts for years.

Ahhhhh, REM. One of my top 5 favourite bands for sure.

I might get shit for this but I'm not a fan of their really really early work. Chronic Town, Murmur, Reckoning, and even some of Fables just doesn't do it for me. Maybe I'm just missing something but nothing jumps out of those albums.

However, Life's Rich Pageant is phenomenal. As is Dead Letter Office, and Document.

Then, I'm only mildly impressed with Out Of Time and then I pretty much adore everything after that. Monster, New Adventures, Around The Sun and Accelerate are probably my favourite records by the band. That's right, you didn't mis-read. I LOVE Around The Sun.

I love that you love Around The Sun! Worst Joke Ever isn't great but I love the rest. Final Straw and Boy In The Well are exceptional. I don't adore 100% of the early stuff either but it's only a few songs I have an issue with. Like you say a top band! :D

Monster is the album that gets the hardest time and I can't find a fault anywhere on it? I Took Your Name, Strange Currencies, Star 69, Tongue, Crush With Eyeliner, What's The Frequency Kenneth, Circus Envy, Bang And Blame, You, King Of Comedy, Let Me In.... that's probably all of it and I can't see where to aim the criticism? :? My least favourite albums are probably Reckoning and Up but I still like them I guess. :)

What what what? I had no idea that Monster gets the most criticism :(

It's a damn near masterpiece. Let Me In absolutely floors me everytime.

I only wish that I could hear you whisper down
Mister Fisherman, to a less peculiar ground
He gathered all his loved ones and he brought them all around
    To say goodbye, nice try

That verse is just amazing to me. It always makes me think of a person who has decided that they're going to commit suicide and nothing is going to change their mind and he knows their family has tried but its not enough. And if it is indeed written about Kurt Cobain then it makes more sense. I can't get enough of that song. When I saw them in Twickenham in 2008 they played it and I just got lost in the song. It felt surreal but haunting at the same time. Very strange moment for me.

I think the trick to loving the early stuff is to expect the songs to be the musical equivalents of Rorschach tests. You can listen to them one time, get something visceral out of it, and then feel something completely different each subsequent time you hear it. You really have to feel the melody and make your own interpretations of the lyrics with each listen.
