seriously, wtf is with these b-sides? (important petition)

edited June 2010 in The Porch
so i guess Riot Act was the last album to have unreleased stuff as b-sides on its singles. what happened? why dont they do that any more? do they really just not have anything else despite what they've said? is the well dry?

surely they know we would all run out and buy a single if it had some unique song on it. without it, whats the point unless you're just some completist collector?

i dont care if its like U or Leatherman or something! Give us real b-sides!!!!!

pretty please.

Yeah being a vinyl collector myself I love 7" singles, there really is nothing cooler then buying a single and discovering a totally new song as the b-side. My fav bands like Oasis, Radiohead and Pearl Jam used to do this. It's real sad this has stopped with not only those bands, but it seems everyone. It's sorta the same argument for why does it take bands 4 or 5 years to release albums now...of course U2 is the worst for this. Beatles put everything out in 7 years the stones released 4 of the best albums ever in 5 years 68-72. Bands used to blame it on the record labels but all these big bands are on there own record labels now, and let's face it, with the internet bands can do anything they want, when they want. The only bands that took advantage of that was NIN and Radiohead....but Radiohead have only put out 1 album since 2003's hail to the thief....thats 7 years!. Least Pearl Jam tours every year and releases a fan club single, I am very thankful for that.

They will end up making more money selling them as a full album.

I remember back in the day, when "Vitalogy" came out just 13 months (the vinyl release) after "Vs.," how Jeff said Pearl Jam wanted to be like Neil Young and put out a new album every year. I guess plans changed.

I'm sure it's probably about money. I loved the CD singles with b-sides too, but I wonder how many of them they actually sold? If it isn't lucrative enough for a record company to invest in production and distribution of a product, then it isn't going to happen. And since PJ doesn't really have a record company per say now I really doubt we will see b-sides until they have enough for a lost dogs type collection, or distribute them as the annual gift.
We have to remember, no matter how much of fans we are, it is still a business. :)

The world expert on wasps of the world and the sounds that they make is taking a stroll down his local high street. As he passes by a record shop, a sign catches his eye: "Just Released - New LP - 'Wasps of the World & the sounds that they make' - available now!"

Unable to resist the temptation, the man goes into the shop.

"I am the world expert on wasps of the world and the sounds that they make. I'd very much like to listen to the new LP you have advertised in the window."

"Certainly sir," says the young man behind the counter. "If you'd like to step into the booth and put on the headphones, I'll put the LP on for you."

The world expert on wasps of the world goes into the booth and puts on the earphones. Ten minutes later, he comes out of the booth and announces, "I am the world expert on wasps of the world and the sounds that they make and yet I recognized none of those."

"I'm sorry sir", says the young assistant. "If you'd care to step into the booth again, I can let you have another 10 minutes."

The world expert on wasps of the world and the sounds that they make steps back into the booth and puts on the headphones again.

Ten minutes later, he comes out of the booth shaking his head. "I don't understand it", he says, "I am the world expert on wasps of the world and the sounds that they make, and yet I still can't recognize any of those!"

"I'm terribly sorry sir" says the young man, "perhaps if you'd like to step into the booth again, you could have 5 more minutes."

Sighing, the world expert on wasps of the world and the sounds that they make steps back into the booth.

Five minutes later he comes out again, clearly agitated.

"I am the world expert on wasps of the world and the sounds that they make and yet I have recognized none of the wasps on this LP."

"I really am terribly sorry", says the young assistant .....

Who buys singles on cd anymore when you can spend 1/4 the money downloading it off of itunes? CD singles don't make any money for anyone anymore.

But they would sell more as another Lost Dogs type of album, which I'm sure will be out eventually.

And this time we will be surprised to hear all of the songs.

They have so much stuff already recorded. They gave some number in the 20's that they were deciding between for this last album. The "cost" I was referring to was in reference to what people were saying earlier about printing and pressing singles.

We don't know what stage these recordings are in though. They could be rough mixes that have to be edited, mastered and pressed onto a cd or linked to a website. No one is going to do that for free.
