3 Facts You Need to Know About the Israeli Attack on Peace Activists on the Gaza Flotilla
Our main media organizations have willingly allowed Israeli spokespeople to fill the airwaves with misinformation. Let's reiterate a few simple facts.
May 31, 2010 |

It is quite astounding that Israel has been able to create over the past 12 hours a news blackout, just as it did with its attack on Gaza 18 months ago, into which our main media organisations have willingly allowed Israeli spokespeople to step in unchallenged.

How many civilians were killed in Israel’s dawn attack on the Gaza-bound flotilla of aid? We still don’t know. How many wounded? Your guess is as good as mine. Were the aid activists armed with guns? Yes, says Israel. Were they in cahoots with al-Qaeda and Hamas? Certainly, says Israel. Did the soldiers act reasonably? Of course, they faced a lynch, says Israel.

If we needed any evidence of the degree to which Western TV journalists are simply stenographers to power, the BBC, CNN and others are amply proving it. Mark Regev, Israel’s propagandist-in-chief, has the airwaves largely to himself.

The passengers on the ships, meanwhile, have been kidnapped by Israel and are unable to provide an alternative version of events. We can guess they will remain in enforced silence until Israel is sure it has set the news agenda.

So before we get swamped by Israeli hasbara let’s reiterate a few simple facts:

* Israeli soldiers invaded these ships in international waters, breaking international law, and, in killing civilians, committed a war crime. The counter-claim by Israeli commanders that their soldiers responded to an imminent “lynch” by civilians should be dismissed with the loud contempt it deserves.

* The Israeli government approved the boarding of these aid ships by an elite unit of commandoes. They were armed with automatic weapons to pacify the civilians onboard, but not with crowd dispersal equipment in case of resistance. Whatever the circumstances of the confrontation, Israel must be held responsible for sending in soldiers and recklessly endangering the lives of all the civilians onboard, including a baby.

Israel has no right to control Gaza’s sea as its own territorial waters and to stop aid convoys arriving that way. In doing so, it proves that it is still in belligerent occupation of the enclave and its 1.5 million inhabitants. And if it is occupying Gaza, then under international law Israel is responsible for the welfare of the Strip’s inhabitants. Given that the blockade has put Palestinians there on a starvation diet for the past four years, Israel should long ago have been in the dock for committing a crime against humanity.

Israel chose to direct its deadly assault not only at Palestinians under occupation but at the international community itself.

Will our leaders finally be moved to act?

I take it you don't live in Israel. Watch your kid get blown up by a rocket by their voted in government. They elected Hamas and you want to cry for them. Amazing. Quit trying to save the fucking world. They don't give a shit about you. What if Canada was launching rockets into the USA. We would probably have a blockade. Then you could go feed the Canadians and call us assholes.

ever hear the phrase "never bring a knife to a gun fight"? ... well, in your particular case - this is essentially what you are doing ... your lack of understanding of what is happening there is quite evident ... i suggest you at least educate yourself on the basics ... even the pro-israeli faction on this board would not say the things you are saying ...

that depends, was canada illegally expanding onto land americans live and setting up an open air prison where those americans were only allowed 1/4 of their daily needs by the canadian government while the candaians treated the americans there like shit and less than animals while the canadian military just stood there or even beat a few elderly american women themselves? if so i'm pretty sure americans would be doing more than shooting crappy homemade rockets at illegal canadian settlements

You don't know if they were not fired on first. That is what they are saying. If true then they have the right to fight back. If they tell them to halt and they reach for something then there are going to be problems. The blockade is listed for Captains and they must stop. The USA has blockades up all around the Middle East. They have every right to stop the ship when they are truely at war with Hamas. They want change vote in a government that is not a terrorist group. I don't agree with everything Israel does. Break laws and this kind of stuff happens. People walk into Iran and cry when they are put in prison. People sneak into North Korea and and then cry about it when they get caught. Common sense saves more lives. There is this place called the Real World. Go serve in the Middle East for 10 years and you will see.

i do know that because i have seen the video of the confiscated weapons and there were NO GUNS, mostly knives (many the same kind i see many americans have clipped to their belts) and crude sticks or metal poles from the ship which i'm assuming were used after a commando unit was dropped on a ship in international waters in the dead of night....

the blockade is illegal, so is forcibly boarding a boat while in international waters

if guns were found it would've been all over the news by now

It did happen. It was called the War of 1812. Canadian and British soldiers came across the lake and burned down the city of Buffalo. US went and kicked their ass back to the falls for it. Then set up blockade. You saw the video. It's not NFL replay. You don't know. Blockades are posted and you must stop. We go after the pirates with are warships and take out their little boats. What... are we to buy some of these so its a fair fight. They are taking over huge ships with them. If they vote out Hamas the US could step up pressure on expansion. They would be getting alot more help if they elect leaders that govern without the use of terror.

    ummmmm....what?

i don't think you can compare the war of 1812 with what is going with the blockade of gaza, at least not with any credibility

    especially when i read this

The United States took the initiative in declaring war for multiple reasons. In 1807, Britain introduced a series of trade restrictions to impede on-going American trade with France, Britain's long-time rival. The U.S. contested these restrictions as illegal under international law

so, in your comparison what israel is doing is wrong, right?

^ and actually it was britain that set up the blockade, not the US, so again, you are saying what israel is doing is wrong, cool, we agree!

anyways, i'm interested in hearing sabreleaf's take on the war of 1812 since to use it as his example would mean he is saying britain was right and the us are horrible terrorists for it
