Does Obama care about the South?

Theres a lot of talk lately about Obama's seeming lack of connection with the southern Gulf states in regards to the oil spill. I get that feeling, because the Federal government seems to decide everything that affects us these days from taxes to education to wars to global environment issues. Having been in New Orleans and Biloxi, MS, in the last six months...there's a cultural thing down there that's a little hard to understand if you haven't been there. They are a seperate culture, which is great and adds to our country, and yet you can say that about lots of places in the US. The middle states (Heartland) have their culture, the southwest has their culture and issues such as immigration, Alaska has its own distinct interests and concerns. We aren't just made up of cities like Boston and San Francisco or New York.

I just wonder if he's so concentrated on a global perspective he's forgotten that our country is more than just a tax revenue base for him to utilize for his bigger picture agenda, and that we are a nation of cultures and individuals who are all just a stones throw away from needing a government that shows leadership, and not just Federal government, and that works where we live and work and raise our families.

Seems the approach has become one size fits all, no matter what the issue.

So has Obama impressed you with his handling of the oil spill or not, and why?

To be fair, the southern state governors have had a history of wanting limited federal govt involvement. To me, it's really their responsibility to ask for the help they need from the feds. That said, I think Obama has turned this oil spill into his administration's katrina. This may even make him a one term president.
It's nice to be nice to the nice.

I don't think that obama is even close to being a great president,in my opinion he stepped in at a perfect time when the country wanted change from the bush years but in all fairness you can't blame the oil spill on the people for wanting or needing the oil and you can't blame obama for not fixing the leek last month and also I think the more he says about the leek the more he will be expected to fix it and he ain't no oil man, he thought he was going to end the war too but after taking the helm for the country I'm sure he found that doing that was not as ez as saying "OLLIE OLLIE OX'N FREE FREE FREE EVRYBODY COME HOME WAR IS OVER"....
bottom line is he's just a guy that can sell himself but dose not know to do the job properly.
just my opinion on the whole thing.

I think he cares about the South, but I also think that there's only so much he can do. He's been down there twice, and today he announced that he's tripling the number of people being sent down there to clean up. He's damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't - if he's not there every day, people complain that he's ignoring the situation. When he does go there, he's mocked for only showing up for a photo op.

He's also being mocked for not intervening in an accident caused by a private company - and being mocked by people whose entire political ideology is based largely on the concept of LESS government involvement. This is the part that puzzles me... conservatives, by and large, want the government to interfere in the day-to-day running of the country as little as possible... yet, now that there's an ecological disaster on the doorstep, he's being criticized for not being involved enough by the very people who don't want Washington involved in the first place.

In a nutshell though, I do think he cares about the South - even if people are saying his inaction on the matter indicates otherwise. For the record, I also think GWB cared about New York, even though he kept on reading My Pet Goat after he was told that the World Trade Center had been hit by terrorists flying hijacked planes.
