Live Review: Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden 5/20/10
Posted Friday 05/21/2010 8:00 AM in Live by Alec Rieger

The Rock of Ages

By middle age, most rock bands have seen their better days. Hunger, youthful passion and insecurity give way to riches, fame, and family, and inevitably, the music suffers. After all, the best rock and roll has always been born of alienation, anger, and aggression, rather than privilege and stratospheric, material success. However, Pearl Jam proved last night that they’ve transcended their superstardom while remaining true to their original intent; the band looked as if they were playing for their lives in a battle of the bands, rather than for an adoring, sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden.

In a nearly three hour set that left one wondering if Eddie Vedder would collapse unconscious on stage, the band treated their fans to indelible versions of classic songs, such as, “Sometimes,” “Breakerfall,” “I Got Id,” and “I Am Mine.” Most importantly, even the new material sounded as if it had been around since the beginning. Perhaps this is the defining mark of a truly great band; one that is still creating its best moments, rather than regurgitating them years afterwards.

Whatever you think about Pearl Jam’s music, one has to respect their credo: no stage costumes, no designer duds, no greatest-hits nostalgia act, no tired maturity, no bloated, theatrical production, and most importantly, not a hint of artistic irrelevance. Twenty years in, 17 albums, and more than 700 shows later, Pearl Jam is still peaking and the heart of rock and roll is very much alive.

Did I miss something? I thought I was a big fan, but it seems I missed about 8 studio albums somehow.

It was also night 1 and not 2. But who cares. Great review. I'm still bitter about the review Dan A. and the NYPost gave the band. :) You should have seen the review Bon Jovi got in tonight's paper!

Edit: I see i'm a little late. We must have all posted at the same time.

Cool review, but I wouldn't exacty call Breakherfall a "classic"! (not that it didn't rock live).

17 Albums - Look at this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearl_Jam_discography and without actually looking at the titles, count the number of "albums" before you get to the Extended Play and Singles section of the website... Some people really do just mail it in...

+1 It's a good review minus the 17 album comment.

Actually, every single one of the 2000 bootlegs (72 in all) was available in stores. My rationale was that LO2L, Benaroya and Gorge all had distinct packaging. And, yes, it's a stretch to count Gorge as 3, but it is 3 different shows whereas the other live releases are single shows.
