Why isn't this oil spill the top news all day everyday?? Is it because there isnt an immediate impact on humans? No one is buried under rubble or drowning in tidal waves or tsunami's? Not to down play those horrific disasters AT ALL, but this is quite possibly the worst environmental disaster ever!!!!!!

Why aren't there any telethons? Celebs protesting? Why isnt this TOP NEWS ALL DAY EVERY DAY!!!!!!

HUMANS ARE ASSHOLES.
I sometimes wonder if they know that I'm gone...

  • Agreed! If it were in a third world country, the US would swoop in to the rescue! (with it's intent to gain global brownie points) The two biggest problems with this are; 1- it happend to the USA, and 2- all of our politicians are in bed with big oil!

wait till the oil and other chemicals get absorbed into the fish or spread throughout the ocean's currents or rain, storms.....oh, and the methane that is leaking....

maybe we really will wipe ourselves out in 2012

i say fuck BP, take away their business license. if you or me kept wrecking our car and killing people every few years i'm pretty sure they would take away our drivers license.

BP has proven they are too irresponsible and cheap to operate in our country.

what we should do is send the 2 tom's in to interview these fucks at all these regulatory agencies and see who is just a shill and who will actually enforce the laws

Agreed folks. Im deeply horrified and shocked by the lack of care that the US is showing to this. I dont mean its people but its politics and its business leaders. BP should be shot for this one. How many times do they need to fuck up before someone steps in and fucks them off.

I don't blame BP. I blame the society we live in. You have to remember that it is Americans who are setting the demand. If you want to blame any one, blame Reagan. He's the one who ripped Carter's solar panels off from the White House lawn 30 years ago. We could have ended this addiction years ago.

so if i ran over a kid i could blame society for giving me a car? while society does bear a lot of guilt for our complacency BP still holds a lot of the fault for being too cheap

Why should we blame BP when the real problem would be those who accept big money from BP to keep fossil fuel regulations to a minimum? That's the real reason we're in this mess. Gov't cronies having sex w/ BP.

i guess its not a huge thing in the media because it isnt killing people, and there isnt much that can be done except wait. just a slow motion trainwreck.

i do think its the biggest story going right now. well between that and the economy. both are pretty bleak.

if you are feeling outrage - the ultimate question is: what the cuss are you gonna do about it!??

    :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

it's easy for us to express outrage in the comforts of our excessive society ... change starts in one place and one place only ... it's not really that hard ... the people we are up against are after one thing and collectively we have a lot of it ...

Quit trying to blame someone or some company on this situation. Scapegoats. Truth is we are all in bed with the oil companies. Do you drive a car? Do you use electricity? Do you use plastic? What is my part in this "disaster"? This is cause and effect people. You drill oil and some will leak out. You use nuclear energy and some will leak out. You mine for coal and some may leak out. It does make me sad to see nature in peril, but in all reality the earth will go on. And if we do somehow "destroy" the earth(unlikely). We are but one planet in a universe. What's the big deal. ;)

don't you think if "the US" knew how to stop this leak, that they would have by now...?

I guess its not just the fact that some of us drive cars or use plastic or electricity etc, but the rate at which we do.

I mean, I dont have a car but will certainly plan to get one some day... but that doesn't mean i'll drive it every-fuckin-where i go... like some people! (ahem, my brother).

People don't care. They're too ignorant unfortunately.
And its true the earth will still be here long after we're gone, we're just killing ourselves (and every other being with us).

not to mention there are very few alternatives.

it also doesn't help that the oil, coal and nuclear industries each got more money in the federal budget than all other alternatives combined. there was almost 11 times as much $ in the budget set aside for loan guarantees to build new nuclear power plants (which will take years to buld then several decades to pay back) than was given to alternatives!

.... exactly this fever brought me back to the MT some days ago ;)
….since that I am following the news and media a lot, while it just does not stop although so much damage -hard to imagine- has already happened.

Anyway, I just can tell by a German view that our media was very low and slow the first month –imagine the length of time- (only the first few days right after the explosion the oil disaster was big in news, then nothing!).
    But since a week or so it is a headline every day on the most important news channels ... but never any forecast, any exact data or any deeper insights;
no info about how bad it could or will get (for all living, animals humans..earth)
    - but today evening news it was said that BP pushed not only mud down there but also trash. Have your heard it, too? How crazy are humans??????????
and no longer report in any magazine has been published yet as far as I know (at least not in the Spiegel which makes me angry and wondering)

so Icompletely agree as I imagine it since quite a while:
this is quite possibly the worst environmental disaster ever!!!!!! :?

But unfortunately our public here is more celebrating the victory at the european song contest as to question or discuss this big tragedy any further -

Good post all along ….interesting read.

  • So, it’s Monday and the new Spiegel has arrived -my favourite news channel-
the oil spill is not the cover story but finally they picked up on the subject, finally, after 5 issues without mentioning the drama.

So, they call “offshore oil drilling” a world wide problem and what happened to the Golf of Mexico could have happened easily also to the North Sea/ Europe. Of course we all know BP is British aka European, and they pointed out that BP must be one of the worst oil companies within the powerful world wide oil industry. BP had only profit in mind. Only profit! And that is never good for you.
They also explained that the American “MMS- Minarals Management Service” is very corrupt and did not do its job at all - but now Obama interferred-

So the Spiegel then referred to the long past of oil drilling in the beauty of the ocean and to the biggest oil disaster so far, that also happened within the Golf.
31 years ago a platform (Sedco 135) exploded in Mexico, and same efforts were undertaken. Spreading chemicals and trying to stop the oil spill. It took 9 month to stop it and 500 Millions litres of oil went into the ocean.
So we knew about those things! And still did support the craziness.

So, 2010 there have been 150 000 tons of oil gotten out of the ground so far.
(Ps. the measures trick took me a while, too).
So, one third of the 500 Mio. Liters has gotten out within a month 2010 compared to 9 month 1979.

Ha, and finally the Spiegel and also Mr Smith –thanks!- confirmed the trash pushed down there during the Top Kill (what a name they have given this attempt…).
so far my news updated from a German perspective...
other questions that were asked in this post originally I can’t answer. The whole problem and its effect on us and all living is still not in talks and discussion of the main media and the public here. Most people and all celebs try to just not think about it and our news channels do not make much effort to remind us.
    …very sad and scary.
so we need to stay in this fever/ outrage for asking more questions, for getting louder.... for.. what else one can do???
there is no way to peace, peace is the way!

You can't be watching much CNN then, because those guys are all over it. It's all they've talked about at night for weeks, and they usually have the live camera showing the leaking oil in the bottom of their screen. Anderson Cooper is broadcasting live from New Orleans every day with updates on what is going on. I don't know how much coverage it's getting on Fox and MSNBC, but CNN is doing a good job keeping it in the news.

There has also been a benefit concert - it didn't get the airplay that the Haitian telethon did, but at the same time, other than Lenny Kravitz, it was pretty much just Louisiana bands.

Maybe the telethon will come a year from now, when the price of seafood is astronomical, there's no bluefin tuna on a menu anywhere because the species is extinct, and hurricanes are flattening the gulf coast because the marshland that usually slows them down has vanished...

I guess a massive ecological disaster isn't as camera-friendly as an orphaned kid.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

    HUMANS ARE ASSHOLES.

my wife and I have been wondering the same thing for a while now. Humans are not only assholes, we are inherently stupid as well with a small does of ADD. If it isn't "new" or "immediately dramatic" then it bares no interest for some reason. Maybe CNN has been covering it non-stop, but my local station and even Canada's national nightly news doesn't carry it as much as they should. It should be the goddamn top story every night!

It disgusts me how apathetic our society has become.

  • ...bring it to the TOP again, so we won't loose the outrage!

    News flash:
Our public TV channels update us every night (at least during the late night news) with insights and researches of the Oil drama (- unfortunately not private TV stations anymore.... ).

Yesterday night they broadcast OBAMA's speak referring to the Oil disaster.
And I truly hope and wish he goes the way he announced!
I wish it so much! Can we trust it?
There is just no national thinking anymore when it comes to our HUGE environmental problems! We only can manage a better world for upcoming generations united - world wide -

So let's hope for Obama! He has the voice needed.
