Courtney Love is offered $162 Million for full rights to Nirvana's publishing.

Is it worth it and if so how much would Pearl Jam be worth?

    The article:
Love offered $162 million for Nirvana rights
    May 25, 2010, 12:10 PM EST
WENN -- Courtney Love has been offered a staggering $162 million for her majority stake in Nirvana's back catalogue.

Love inherited Nirvana's publishing rights when her husband and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994.

Love, the singer of Hole, sold off 25 percent of the End of Music catalogue in 2006, pocketing $50 million. But she recently admitted she was considering offloading her remaining 75 percent share after becoming convinced the royalty payments she receives are "cursed."

She insisted the decision was motivated by emotions, not financial gain, because she simply wants to move on from the Cobain tragedy.

She said, "I'm thinking about selling off all of Kurt's publishing. All of the rights, everything. It's not a financial decision; it's an emotional one.

"He was the best friend I've ever had, but Kurt and I were only married for three years, and now I need to have my own life. I'm always 'the widow' and that drives me nuts. That money has been cursed since the day it started to come in. It's not really my money."

Executives at Evergreen Capital are keen to relieve Love of her worries and have stepped up with the big money offer, reports the New York Daily News.

A source says, "Courtney thinks the catalogue comes with too many memories. It's haunted."

Love has yet to respond to the offer.

And the way I read that article is that she always had 100% of the publishing rights. If she only had a third to begin with (with Grohl and Novoselic each having a third respectively), NO ONE ever had "majority stake".

I thought they were no longer on speaking terms. Didn't Frances get emancipated from Courtney and cut ties last year?

It's been a long time since I read the book "Come as You Are," but if I remember correctly, this is how the money broke down. Before Nevermind, everything was split three ways. After Nevermind became hugely successful in sales, Kurt decided he should get more of the share since he basically wrote all of the material, (although I think Smells Like Teen Spirit has all three members credited for writing that one). After the redistribution of the shares, Kurt received 90% of the profits while Krist and Dave split the remaining 10%.

Also, someone in a previous post mentioned Chad Channing. I have no idea what he gets, but I can remember an interview with Mark Arm from Mudhoney where he said Dan Peters still gets royalty checks for his work on Incesticide, but it's nothing to retire on.

I've always wondered how much Dave Krusen has made off of Ten.
  • Imagine how much the publishing would be worth had Nirvana made another studio album before Kurt offed himself.

Maybe it's "haunting" her similar to the beating heart in "The Tell-Tale Heart." Does she have a guilty conscience over a certain death and how it did or didn't go down (conspiracy, conspiracy)!

(note: they don't have a font for sarcasm. just read my last post with a sarcastic voice in your head)
  • Whoever buys the right could probably make it back with Guitar Hero/Rock Band mass releases and a pre-loaded special edition iPod.

Pearl Jam used to split everything 5 ways starting with VS.
    Songs credited to "Abbruzzese/Ament/Gossard/McCready/Vedder"

Just click on songs and see that they're credited to all the band members:
    http://pearljam.com/music/releases/studio%20album/vs

Vitalogy had some songs credited to "pearl jam" as a whole, with some songs credited to a couple of individuals. I thought I had read that Dave A was not happy about the change of the royalty structure and voiced his opinion, which is one reason he was let go.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)
