LA 2009 Boots Seem Amazing - Better than Philly 2009 Boots?

I am debating whether to buy the 4 LA shows or the Philly box set. What I have heard on the LA shows on PJ Radio is stellar - clear, full, rich. People don't seem to talk a lot about the LA shows but they seem awesome. Of course the Philly shows are legendary but what I have heard of them on PJ Radio isn't as good as LA. Can any boot aficianados give suggestions on which shows to buy? Maybe a mix of two LA boots and two Philly boots? Can't really spend the money to buy all eight shows.

    YES YES YES!

I just listened to LA 4 because I was "tainted" from listening to the entire Philly debacle twice in a row.

You can't go wrong with LA 3 and LA 4. I would grab those and maybe Philly 4 because of the fun/rarities factor.

The sound on the L.A Bootlegs is incredible (It probaly has alot to do with the smaller venue) but the recordings are a notch above everything else that has come out in the last couple of years.

  • This is all really helpful. The last two shows in both cities - wow just looking at the setlists.

Nobody talks about LA 1 + 2, but I thought those were some very good shows too... :)

Keep in mind that Philly 3 is very sloppy. It may have been fun in the room, and it looks good on paper, but as a bootleg it doesn't really fly.

agreed. While they didn't have the setlist gems or guest appearances that 3 and 4 had, I thought the first two shows were really strong.

The gibson amphitheatre in LA was the best sounding venue I've ever been too. Place was amazing.
All the LA boots sound great, but for setlist sake 3 and 4 are the clear favorites, tho night 2 was sneaky good. Night 1 the crowd sucked so it's not worth getting. I will say that these 2010 boots sound just as good so far. listened to KC and Columbus and am very impressed.

  • I lived in L.A. for 7 years and now live in Nashville. I was tempted to go to the Gibson shows b/c the venue is so good (and of course Pearl Jam is so good), but the weeknight dates were bad and I couldn't justify it after hitting both Chicago shows in August (which were good by PJ standards but not exceptional). Man, I wash I had been able to go the Gibson shows. The venue kills, made specifically for music, built for sound.

I think that the west coast shows just don't get the hype around these parts - East Coast fans are far more vocal and eager to beat the drums on how good their shows were. I mean, I saw Ed Vedder at the Wiltern on his solo tour and several times on the east coast and the Wiltern show was longer and better, but nobody I know that saw shows on both coasts makes a point of crowing about the west coast.

And as a side note, I was at MSG1 and MSG2 last week. Had a blast. Love MSG as a venue. It's superbly designed (long lines are minimalized, sightlines are great, feels intimate though it seats close to 20,000). Sound wasn't as good as it could have been but crowd energy was very strong. I just think artists step up their game for MSG cuz it's the world's biggest stage and you can count on a great crowd. I thought they built the place to a frenzy with the encores in Night 1. Night 2 was super but was it really leagues better than, say, Indy a couple weeks before (which I attended)? Not really, in my opinion. I think hard core East Coasters get a little zealous about crowing their shows epic, is all. Nothing wrong with that, it's all good.
