Hunger Strike w. guests

So, are we all in consensus that Ben from Band of Horses has done the best job yet by a singer not named Chris Cornell? Are the only other two who have tried it Corin from Sleater Kinney and Andrew from Wolfmother or am I forgetting someone?

I think he does a pretty darn good job. It's obvious that singing the crazy high parts like Chris don't really suit his vocal style, but he gives it his best shot and seems to at the very least be on key...

Ben has a nicely suited higher pitch to his voice. Nice compliment to Ed's baritone. If I wasn't geeking out over Band of Horses so much since seeing them, I'd go with the Wolfmother dude.

I was VERY surprised. He didn't just sound good, he sounded GREAT. keep in mind I don't know anything about BoH. so that says alot I guess.

I'm not gonna lie, the chris Cornell solo version with Chester Bennington from Linkin Park is surprisingly decent. Not bad at all.

When Ben from Band of Horses first walked out on stage I expected it to be RTFW - But that first note of Hunger Strike and I melted - Then Ben gave so much that I realized he is getting to be us right then and there - yeah he has some stage presence and a great sounding band - but he was getting to walk out on that stage THAT NIGHT at that moment after we had been taken on a fanfuckingtastictrip by Ed's setlist selection that night and be us - one of us from the crowd
Someone singing a song you truly love loud as fuck and sweet as ice tea with PEARL JAM - THE PEARL JAM that came and ROCKED MSG that night!!!
What you saw in Ben that night I think is exactly what we were all feeling at that second and he expressed it just wonderfully - To get that song is a real treat - we were blessed

Depends on which Cornell shows up. If it is the Cornell in October 2003, you've got a train wreck, worse than all the others who sat in his spot. If it is the Cornell that showed up in Oct, 2009, nobody else could even come close to his greatness.

As far as Corin is concerned, I thought her performance on Hunger Strike late in the US/Mex 2003 Tour was awesome. It suited her voice very well. On the other hand, when she did songs that didn't suit her style (Leaving Here, Fortunate Son, RITFW), she sounded like a circular saw buzzing through a sheet of plywood.

Ben was somewhere in the middle, between good Cornell and Corin. Which is all good

We did go nuts when Ed came in for his part - and I said it to my wife in the most respectful way - "Eddie just destroyed that guy!" She agreed with a grin

I watched this video of Andrew, and at first it seemed okay, but then at the end of the lines of the first verse, he doesn't seem to know how the song is supposed to go and he finishes each line early, not drawing the words out the right way. And maybe it's just the youtube video or fans near-by, but he does seem to be off key or something on the "i'm going hungry" parts...

Its funny - when Ben came out, i thought "All along the watchtower", which is what they did in Newark (and Hartford), but then i noticed that he had a cheat sheet with him (which he never used). ANd it was like a bolt of lightning hit me -- Ben has the voice for Hunger Strike! Then Ed said we are going to try an experiment (or something to that effect) and then the opening notes kicked in -- gave me chills. I thought Ben was perfect.

When Ben walked on stage I leaned over to my buddy and told them they've been done All Along The Watchtower a few times, so i figured it would be that again. Then the first chords Of Hunger Strike started playing and I was floored. He did an awesome job.

Here i was my video. I missed the very beginning cuz i was in awe that they started playing it.

I remember this little combo... Saw Chris Cornell solo tour in 2007, in Sydney, and Rise Against front man Tim McIlrath sang "Hunger Strike" together, and it was damn impressive! Apparently they ran into each other at the airport that day, Chris invited him to the show, and Tim mentioned something about it being one of his favourite songs, so Chris invited him to sing it that night.

I was thinking before the show what they could play that I'd really freak out about. It was only my 8th show but I'd been really lucky with setlists and heard really pretty much every song I really, really LOVE live. But I'd always wanted to hear Hunger Strike. I was so jealous hearing the LA boot with Cornell and thought to myself how wonderful it'd be if somehow he was a special guest in NYC. But obviously I wasn't putting any hope into it and when Ben came out I figured they were gonna do Watchtower like in Newark and when Ed said they were gonna try an experiment I thought it'd be some other cover, but then they hit those first notes and I freaked out. I just lost it. And in the small space before Ben came in I was also very worried that he'd fuck it up but honestly he was such a great fill in for Cornell. He killed it and you could see how freaked he was, like he knew the shoes he was stepping into and perhaps knew what this song meant to this crowd, and obviously he'd heard the crowd going nuts all night. But when everyone in the whole place was rocking out to him and Ed, Ben had the biggest smile and was clearly having the time of his life singing in front of a sold out MSG of screaming fans. I love how on the YouTube videos you can clearly hear the audience singing every line. I hope this comes across on the boot.
