  • Almost every single lyric in Marker in the Sand is out of this world. Where did he come up with those lyrics.

    Inspiring!
"Nothing changes but the surrounding bullshit, that has grown."

  • ...turned my world to BLACK
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be
Dalai Lama—To say that humility is an essential ingredient in our pursuit of spiritual transformation may seem to be at odds with what I have said about the need for confidence. But there is clearly a distinction to be made between valid confidence or self-esteem, and conceit - which we can describe as an inflated sense of importance, grounded in a false image of self.
  • The use of a tattoo as a metaphor for pain that, in theory, will last the life of the tattoo paints a picture of a person who will be in pain for the rest of his natural life. I can liken it to the Myth of Sisyphus, the Greek doomed to roll a rock up a hill for all of eternity. Both punishments are harsh and never-ending.

    really is a powerful line.

  • Black...

    See Signature below.
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
    Of what was everything?
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be...

"I'll ride the wave where it takes me" - Release (also my lifes motto)

"He who forgets will be destined to remember" - Nothingman

"Don't see some men as half empty, see them half full of shit" - 1/2 full

"The ocean is full 'cos everyone's crying" - I am Mine

and all of Black and Indifference
I'll ride the wave where it takes me
  • It's hard to pick a song from the most recent album, but I think that Vedder's lyric writing has only improved over the years. The music might not be as intense or awesome as it was in the era of Vitalogy and No Code, but Eddie The Poet has evolved quite nicely, leaving some of the nicest gems on Backspacer.

My personal fave would have to be:

Last I saw, he was out there waiting
A silhouette in the black light, full moon glow
In the sand there he stands upon the shore
    Forevermore

I just lost my 19 year old brother to cancer; he was a huge PJ fan. To me, these lyrics describe him and how I try to imagine him now. He's standing there on the shore watching over us, a silhouette in the black light, full moon glow.

While this clearly isn't the intent of the song, one way to define great poetry is that which can be applied to many contexts, and can touch different people in different ways. In this manner, EV is quite the poet.

  • Meaning behind Lukin?
  • I wish I was the verb to trust, and never let you down

    +1
  • I've used hammers made out of wood
I have played games with pieces and rules..
I've deciphered tricks at the bar...
But now you're gone,... I haven't figured out why...
I've come up with riddles... and jokes about war...
I've figured out numbers and what they're for...
I've understood feelings.. and I've understood words...
But how could you be taken away?...

For anyone who has lost someone special these lyrics are heavy, but then you think of the goods times and it becomes a bit easier.

"she holds the hand that holds her down, she will RISE ABOVE"
  • Every year I get older I come back to:

"if I knew then what I know now"

    Sounds corny but it's true
  • and wherever you've gone
    and wherever we might go
it don't seem fair...you seem to like it here
your light's reflected now, reflected from afar
we were but stones, your light made us stars

    - Black
    - Corduroy, particularly "Everything has chains, absolutely nothing's changed".
-"Some die just to live" - Immortality
    - In My Tree. Just a great, great song.
    - "I would've fallen from the sky to you, but parachutes have opened now" - Parachutes
    - Come Back
    - "Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name" - Elderly Woman

I could list so many more.
