Louisville, KY Recommendations

If anyone is from around Louisville or knows of the location, I'm looking for places to eat, things to do etc. We're going down there for a horse race in a few weeks and I've never been. Tried researching some stuff on the net but can't find much. I'm really looking for some local dives to eat at and some overall time killers to entertain me for a day. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks~

Havana Rumba is a cool place to eat that's probably not well known and not a chain. It's Cuban.

The minor league baseball team is pretty good time I hear.

I think Churchill Downs is in session so you could go to the home of the KY Derby and lose some money on some horse races.

4th Street Live is kind of the happening place in the evenings:

was in Louisville once. great town. Bunch of hotels right near the airport which is like 2 miles from Churchill downs at most and not far from center city area. 4th street live was an awesome place the one time i went - lots of cool bars and can take your drinks on the street from place to place. and southern people are so damn nice and their women talk with that sexy southern drawl so i'm sure you will enjoy it.

The Ville is a lot of fun.

Here's some local restaurants that I love:

Pizza: Wick's Pizza in the Highlands

Italian: Rocky's Italian on the River (actually southern Indiana, but great atomsphere)

Sushi: Sake Blue in Fern Creek, or Sapporo in the Highlands

Seafood: Mike Linnig's. This place is kinda off the beaten path, and its mostly outdoors. Mostly fried fish and whatnot. But a fun atmosphere. Been around for like 80 years.

As for hotspots. the whole downtown 4th Street Live thing is okay. But its kinda pricey, and very commercial. I prefer the Bardstown Road / Highlands area. Lots of little bars, and pubs. and several have live music nightly. Phoenix Hill Tavern is a fun place, been around a long time. But if you're looking for more of a "clubbin" scene, 4th Street Live Downtown is where its at.

Sounds like you're going to Churchill Downs for some racing. Churchill his beautiful. If you have time check out the Derby Museum there, its just been fully renovated due to some flooding last year.

Someone mentioned the Minor League baseball team. The Louisville Bats are downtown, and its a nice new stadium. Very fun.

Also downtown, The Louisville Slugger Museum, and the Muhammed Ali Center.

If you have time, you are a short drive from Bardstown, (about 40 minutes), which is home to a lot of Bourbon Distilleries. Jim Beam is probably the closest to Louisville....exit 112 off I-65 south.

Hit me with a PM if you need any more info, I live near Louisville, and have all my life, so if I don't know about something, I'm sure I can find out in a phone call or two. Have fun!
