Letting go
(something I wrote when I decided I should not have children because of my chronic illness)
A deserted street in the carnival
enters all my dreams.
Little footsteps wandering
through misty lakes and frozen trees.
A nightmare always takes its hold
behind your empty eyes.
I try to keep my balance
as tears like raindrops fill my skies.
I sit on the edge with the black pouring down,
like a cradle full of wishes,
a king without a crown.
I feel for something holy
in the all to restless wind.
I never seem to grasp it
along with all this sin.
I see a thousand eyes
beneath their bony wings.
Screaming out for reverence
and settling for shiny things.
A swarm creeps up and takes a seat
on the alter
in this cage;
and dances circles at my feet
and fills this night with bitter rage.
I can never come to you,
and you will never know,
that when I see tomorrow now,
it only feels like letting go.

If I knew where it was I would take you there. There's much more than this

"To question your government is not unpatriotic --
to not question your government is unpatriotic."
-- Sen. Chuck Hagel
I think the fact that you put the "reason" for the poem added so much to it.
Thank you! When I read it over after I wrote it...it scared me a little...I guess I didn't know how I really felt until I wrote it down.
I appreciate the feedback.

"It's good to get that stuff out"
therapeutic for you (I hope)
and we get this beautifully written insight into your life.
Thank you.
"what a long, strange trip it's been"
Thank you. I appreciate your kind words. It is very therapeutic for me to write. I write so that I am able to really feel...and then I can accept things.
