Say what you will about the UFC, this is a sad story about a great fighter who passed away this week while camping (etc) out in the desert.

Read the end of the story for a mention of Eddie Vedder's "Guaranteed."

  • Just read about this. I'm a big fight fan and I'm shocked to hear about Evan Tanner. Everything I've ever read or heard about him was that he was really a free-spirited guy and had a huge sense of adventure. I guess he spoke of his camping trip that he was taking and actually said it wasn't an "Into the Wild" thing. Sometimes bad things happen to good people, I guess. He always had exciting fights. Very sad deal.

  • The story sounds very similar to Into The Wild.
  • Wow. Crazy story.. just visited his MySpace. I hope he wasn't trying to pull a Christopher McCandless.
  • thank you for posting this, i had no idea... i'm a pretty big mma fan and a fan of evan's.... i just can't believe this.

He had troubles in the past and was doing such a good job of changing things around in his life, it's really hard to believe this happened.

    RIP EVAN

I'm not too familiar with the MMA circles but man, way too soon to be taken away.

    RIP Evan Tanner

thanks for posting this. evan was a great person too. he went out of his way to help people when he didn't have to. he was humble and kind, and always did things in his own way.

i wish you could have had a few more adventures, my friend.

On bended knee is no way to be free
Lifting up an empty cup, I ask silently
All my destinations will accept the one that's me
    So I can breathe...

Circles they grow and they swallow people whole
Half their lives they say goodnight to wives they'll never know
A mind full of questions, and a teacher in my soul
    And so it goes...

Don't come closer or I'll have to go
Holding me like gravity are places that pull
If ever there was someone to keep me at home
    It would be you...

Everyone I come across, in cages they bought
They think of me and my wandering, but I'm never what they thought
I've got my indignation, but I'm pure in all my thoughts
    I'm alive...

Wind in my hair, I feel part of everywhere
Underneath my being is a road that disappeared
Late at night I hear the trees, they're singing with the dead
    Overhead...

Leave it to me as I find a way to be
Consider me a satellite, forever orbiting
I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me
    Guaranteed
  • a gifted fighter who over came a lot, Tanner was a great champion and a better person to all who knew him.

    rest in peace
Things were different then. All is different now.
I tried to explain. Oh, somehow.

Interesting how quickly nature can overcome even the most badass humans out there. Sometimes all that strength and heart just don't mean a thing. RIP

i don't know what happened to this guy...
...but what i do know is that while ed's 'guaranteed' had to do with the subject from 'into the wild', there's no way he would want it associated with someone who is currently dead under for reasons out of their control.

think he, and the band, have had enough of that.

that's what's important to you out of this story?
    sigh...

i guess just to clarify....evan really liked the song, and liked eddie vedder as well. he'd been listening to some eddie and was doing some reading about the california deserts as he planned for his trip.

as he'd had it before, "guaranteed" was playing on his myspace profile. i think he put it up as soon as he heard the song for the first time. he changed it a couple of times, but this is the song still playing on his myspace page. i don't think evan ever intended for the song to be associated with him, nor did he want to be associated with "into the wild". i know that for sure, even though he did enjoy the movie and the story.

people are making tribute videos using the song and mentioning it in articles probably because of the similarities between evan's story and the film, and the fact that it was playing on his page at the time of his passing.

a lot of us have had "guaranteed" as a song on our myspace profiles (if we have one) i'm sure. evan was just like the rest of us, playing the song because he liked it. we don't choose the time when we leave this place and what people choose to associate with our passings.

still, it's a beautiful song and evan was a beautiful person.
  • this is an interview i posted in my tribute thread for evan on the AET, but i thought i would post it here as well...

a two part interview that i believe was done during the training leading up to his last fight against kendall grove. evan talks about his philosophies on life and what he has learned in his life, making change in the world, kindness, his fascination with the world and reasons for adventuring, and trying to find purpose in the paths we follow...

the interview is called "for a better world".

"we've kind of run away with ourselves, run away from ourselves here in this society. we've lost touch. very few people get it... took me a while."
