**My Sudden Hearing Loss and Fan Request for MSG1**

ive been a fan of PJ since 2004, first show in 05 - joined 10C in feb '06, attended 14 since then including bonnaroo and hartford a few nights ago. On April 21st I woke up without hearing in my left ear. I figured it was earwax buildup/blockage cuz I've had a history of that my whole life, but when I got outta bed and started experiencing vertigo and vomiting - I knew something was wrong. After a couple of days of blood work, MRI, and low dose steroids - my ENT specialist said I am experiencing SSHL or Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: http://www.hearinglosshelp.com/articles ... ngloss.htm
The MRI came back negative for tumors, etc. which is good and I've been on the gold standard for recovery - high dose prednisone steroids - however 1/3 ppl never regain their hearing...and right now...im on day 22 out of 27 and i still don't have anything. Went for 2nd opinion in NY...got same instructions. Said I have the best chance of getting it back since im in good health, young (24 y/o), and got on the steroids as soon as possible (since some ppl never see their doctor thinking it will eventually come back and by then it's too late)
my whole life, outside of work, revolves around music. I started going to concerts/festivals (104 Fest in Hartford was my first concert at age 16) in high school and basically been to over 200 shows and seen over 500 different groups in the last 8 years either as a fan or working for merch companies (Hartford Meadows/All Points West). My biggest obsession has always been Pearl Jam. Doctors say I can still lead a normal life as long as I protect my right ear (which has 100% hearing) - I tried out my new putty earplugs sat nite at hartford, and although it was different, it wasn't too bad - just smthg i'll have to get used to b/c i'd rather die than give up music/going to shows since it's what sets me free
We all have our holy grails when it comes to PJ songs...in 2008 it was Release, Smile and Fuckin Up for me. When I got Release at Bonnaroo during the 2nd encore it made the whole trip worth while - sorry it had to be at the expense of that boy's father who escapes my memory and was a news anchor. After the MSG shows, I really didnt think I was gonna get the other two...but low and behold...2nd encore of Hartford changed my outlook on this band forever. They dedicate songs to ppl and they care about requests...just look at Jenn's request, Crazy Breed, that boy that got his note to the guys at Bristow, the girl from Hartford that made it onto the stage and in Deep Volume #5...the examples go on and on. That's what this band does for its fans. I've always had a lot of respect for Mike McCready also and his battle w/Crohn's. I was diagnosed with IBS when I was 10 y/o and been living with it ever since. It's like the little brother of Crohn's but not as severe. My cousin has Crohn's at btwn the pills, the foods he can/cant eat, and the struggle - it's a lot and I'm proud to say that I donate to the Wishlist Foundation, support the CCFA posters, and support Mike and his battle.
My Request: I've wanted to hear Off He Goes every since I bough RVM in 2004...its just one of the most beautiful songs - and altho I don't have a personal experience tied to soldiers going away to war, coming home, and then going back (that's what I think is the meaning of the song any way - which is open to interpretation) it's just a song ive always wanted to hear but always miss. Long Road is the same way for me - I just love the song and it reminds me of my love for Uncle Neil. PJ got me into Neil Young. I was fortunate enough to attend the concert at MSG in 2008 with my dad and we're actually going THIS SUNDAY to his all-acoustic only show in Wallingford, CT on Sunday. I'm become such a fan of Neil and Pearl Jam's covers over the years; thankful to have seen Harvest Moon, RITFW, Fuckin Up, I Got ID, Needle & Damage Done ev solo, and Long Road would be so special to hear on Thursday night. I know the song is about death but it's also about life, which is what Pearl Jam gives to us at every show and thru their music.
I know this was long but it's smthg I wanted to say. Please post your thoughts/comments about SSHL if you happen to know anyone that has been thru it and got their hearing back or still hasn't as I'd really appreciate to hear more stories. Thanks to everybody and I'm sorry if I'm in front of you for future shows as I'm prolly the tallest 10C member at 6'9" and you've prolly pointed and laughed at the huge skinny guy rocking out at shows - that's me! I try to score aisle seats so I can move into the aisle as to not block somebody's view.
To Pearl Jam: Please open with Long Road @ MSG1 and please play Off He Goes if it goes with the flow of your song selection Thursday Night. If not, I'm gonna try to get a hold of a spare for n2.
Thanks,
Mike

You sure a bird didn't fly into your ear and that's what is causing the hearing loss?
I'm really sorry to hear about the hearing thing - just like you, I live for my music, and would much rather die than lose my hearing (and I mean that). It freaks the crap out of me that I'm 20 and have not-so-subtle ringing in my ears for about a month following a show these days... I've still got ringing from Buffalo :?
Oh well. Cure for that? MSG

I feel for you man and I hope you get this... truly...
crossing my fingers for msg1...im gonna be hating myself if they play either song at newark tonite...i really could make the drive down and floor seats opened up...but i think its smarter to go to n1 and see what they play then try to score a ticket to n2 if i really feel obligated

All you others talking about tinnitus. C'mon. Ear plugs. I've been seeing shows at least half my life, have some tinnitus, but took steps to not get anymore. Even the band wears hearing protection. Its not uncool to protect your hearing.

That is true, but the people that mentioned it seemed to think it came from being at loud shows.

really hoping the boys bust out Long Road for the opener and Off He Goes during the main set or first encore

i'll be wearing my flannel, green 05 tour tee (my good luck charm), and EV trucker hat or Mets hat ( i cant decide lol) so if you see me feel free to say hi
