There was an interesting thread closed in another forum. I guess Mr. Vedder made a comment about them killing themselves?

How can anyone know what a lobbyist truly is and NOT hope for their demise? Not literally, of course..... it's just a practice that should have disappeared when the automobile was invented.

You mean AIPAC don't have the purest intentions?

Though maybe we should not allow this thread to turn into an extension of the closed threads on the other page, because it will only end up closed too.

In the meantime, what lobbyists was Ed referring to exactly? What inspired his comments? Was he referring to the lobbyists for the Medical industry, or was one of the organizations that he works/campaigns for recently hijacked by these money Nazis?

kinda hard to limit them when most politicians in high places are married to one and/or have children who are one.

kinda dated now but pigs at the trough listed some politicians like that and they were all in key positions as majority/minority leaders, whips, heads of influential committees....

Lobbists. That is the reason I argue against Term Limits.
If our Representatives were limited by law to serving 2 terms... just as our President is... the only continuity in our government would be the lobbyists/Special Interest Groups. I know Congress is basically a bag of shit.... but, imagine if the lobbyists were the ones in charge. We would probably long for the days when Congress didn't do shit.
We already have Term Limits in place... It's called 'Elections'.

they are basically people paid by corporations or special interests to sway politicians into enacting laws in their favor, they get a lot of access while an average member of the voting public gets little if any to their representatives (but we put up with it so....)

    the dictionary says

to conduct activities aimed at influencing public officials and especially members of a legislative body on legislationtransitive verb 1 : to promote (as a project) or secure the passage of (as legislation) by influencing public officials
2 : to attempt to influence or sway (as a public official) toward a desired action

    wikipedia says

Lobbying (also Lobby) is a form of advocacy with the intention of influencing decisions made by legislators and officials in the government by individuals, other legislators, constituents, or advocacy groups. A lobbyist is a person who tries to influence legislation on behalf of a special interest or a member of a lobby. Governments often define and regulate organized group lobbying that has become influential on policy.

Lobbyists may also represent their clients' or organizations' interests in dealings with federal, state, or local executive branch agencies or the courts. Lobby groups and their members sometimes also write legislation and whip bills. In 2007 there are over 17,000 federal lobbyists based in Washington, DC.

lack of critical thinking and maturity

the OP walked out of the show after ed said this
  • just to respond to the OP (of the old thread): get over yourself you oversensitive ninny.

i read the first few pages but i was waiting for it to get moved to MT before commenting ... not sure how it ended up ...

but, in all fairness - ed shouldn't be saying for people to kill themselves - sets a harsh tone and i think he either apologized to said something different ...

in the end tho - blaming the lobbyist is like blaming the missle that killed the kids ... ultimately, it's the big corporations that have no disregard for public interest that are being served ... and they have the gov't exactly where they want them ...

Agree. But I'm also surprised that anyone would walk out of a concert due to a drunk guy with a mic talking tough BS. We've all said stuff like that without really meaning it I'd bet. It's actually refreshing and shows a certain level of maturity and enlightenment for Ed to understand what he said was wrong soon after it happened and take the time to amend his original comment.

Like when Ed said something about driving an SUV supported terrorists at a concert I was at...
I was like, "Yeah, yeah, Eddie... I get the whole Saudi Arabia/oil thing... but, I like my SUV". I didn't take it personally and I sure as hell wasn't going to let it ruin my night.
I guess some people take things other people say more seriously... I'm sure glad I'm not wired that way.

why not? its obvious he wasnt serious, and i seriously doubt anyone ever killed themselves because a rock star told them to! its just oversensitive political correctness, and its completely unnecessary to apologize. People shouldnt take every little thing he says as some religious commandment.

compared to his old rants, he has toned it down a lot lately.

    I was at the show.

Ed was referring to Goldman Sachs lobbyists and efforts to loosen federal oversight of the stock market. He questioned why after we the taxpayers gave them billions of dollars in bail out money.

He ask if any were at the show and then they should kill themselves for working in such a manner. He stated this a few times and how the actions of these investments groups hurt a lot of people. Everyone was laughing. Ed then stopped and said no I don't mean it you shouldn't kill yourself I don't condone that. He closed by saying they should change jobs and doing something good.

In all fairness I don't believe Ed was drunk this night. He didn't bring any wine on stage, nor did he smoke, he commented how he was drinking gatrorade from a 9:30 club water bottle.

The OP who was offended and walked out is/was a 10C member. Don't know why or how but that's what he said.

I have issue with how Kat closed the thread. Stating Ed made a mistake and the OP shouldn't be treated so harsh by other 10C members. I was one who called him a JACKASS.

What Ed said wasn't a mistake. A mistake is saying Purdential was lobbying for lack laws and received bailout money.

Ed made an error in judgement or stated something he felt but should never state at that point in time. But that is NOT a mistake.

True. No one ever asked Bill Hicks to apologize.

My opinion is that if someone is prone to take offense at a throwaway, facetious comment at a rock concert or comedy club then they'd be better off staying at home and stroking themselves off in front of Pop Idol, or some Fox News Anchor-woman.
