Can MSG 1 and 2 be better than Philly 3 and 4?

So, I was at Philly 1 and 2 this past year, and I was blown away, especially at Philly 1. I have no problem with people saying Philly 3 or 4 were better based on the setlist. But the setlist makes the argument slightly subjective.

So my question is this. Can these MSG shows be better? Can the boys pull out some songs they have never performed, such as Otherside or Strangest Tribe? Will they play many rarities like BRY, Undone, Alone, Hold On etc.? Can they please open with crowd pleasing tunes like Wash, Release, Oceans, or even Fatal? O maybe even do something unexpected with their closers? But most of all, can NYC have more energy, a lot more energy than the Philly 3 and 4 crowds?

Never been to a MSG show. Just curious what you all think.

See you there. Can't wait.

I don't think any show will ever touch Philly 4 as far as rarities go. I mean...they played Bugs. But as far as crowd energy goes, I've always found Philly and NYC to be pretty similar.

It's possible as I believe emations will running high as well. New York is a city that is going through alot right now with the financial crisis and it always being a terrorism target unfortunately. It's still home to many wealthy people obviously and the cultural center of the world but I can imagine that things get tough, and we're all going through a recession / depression.

I was their in the crowd for Philly 3 & 4 and the they were great. The emotions of the evening the Phillies Yankees World Series going on at the same time in the same parking lot, it was great. The last event in the building was defiantly special. But I have been fortunate enough to be at every MSG show. In my opinion as a New Yorker, and somewhat impartial, the MSG crowd is the best and the band feeds off their energy.

I agree, Philly energy is AWESOME!! You also have to include the emotion of the crowd letting go of the Spectrum at the hands of PJ. There was an extra level of emotion. I can't wait to experience my first MSG PJ crowd. :D

MSG always has the potential to be the loudest and the best. It's up to us! Bring it, everyone!!

I agree with what's been said that in terms of rarities it's unlikely to beat Philly 4, but to me that's bean counting when you get to this level. It's not gonna be a boring setlist, no way.

And for what it's worth the acoustics at MSG are better than the spectrum. IMHO, their the best I've heard.

But the biggest thing is that we do our part, and show all our love and excitement for this band. Then it all just builds. I think there's an awful lot of excitement for these shows.

I will be attending my first MSG shows next week, so I can't speak on my experience yet. I've heard the opposite from quite a few people about the sound in MSG vs the Spectrum. Something Eddie commented on saying the energy at MSG is always special but the sound is not up to the Spectrum's standard. I'm hoping MSG's poor sound has been overstated and is indeed like you say a great sounding place. I'll find out in less then a week!!!

I was at nights 2-4 for Philly and I think that was a special time and place. That being said I also think that trying to compare concerts is a fun conversation but its just like trying to determine what is the greatest game ever played or judging players across generations. Its all subjective. I've been to 8 shows so far and every night has had something special that I still remember from that show. That's why this band is the best and why I've seen them multiple times. I've heard so many great things about the MSG shows and can't wait to experience it myself. I have no doubt everyone will bring it and the band will feed off of it and honestly I don't care what they play because I love just about they anything they do play.

    5 More Days!!!

    NO

better then 4 shows in 5 days to close a legendary venue with those setlists? NO SHOT... as a matter of fact that is the reason i am not going, it would be a let down

i have no clue why everyone hypes up MSG like they do... i dont think it is that big of a deal... i have seen 3 PJ concerts there and they are not even close to my top 5

I think the MSG crowds are more intense, and the band feeds off that energy.

maybe this time will be a little better, but those Spectrum shows were nuts, crowd prob better at MSG, but wont get anywhere near a setlist philly 4 got

it's called playing to the crowd of that night. you know that thing they call an act. do you really think ed would be stupid enough in philly to say a ny arena is better then the spectrum. ed would get booed.

both arena's are overrated and live off their lure and i say that as seeing 3 concerts at both venues

crowd wise no venue will top msg but the setlists are always missing a few rare songs

4 show's under 5 night skies in Philly playing over curfew time & being the last band to ever play on that stage while kicking out as much jams as possible? No way MSG could even close to this. I was there for all 4 Philly show's & was there back in '08 @ both MSG show's. MSG is the well know arena the wold know's & loves. And probably the most expensive place to watch a game/show etc .. The Philly show's were magical. The Rocky montage @ the beginning of every show. The lady who kept the fan's updated on the Phillies/Yankee's game, Bug's played for the first time EVER, the band dressed up in Devo wear playing Whip It, Ed's boxing gloves, the rarities that broke out, Out of My Mind, Sweet Lew, Hold On, Mamason Trilogy, confettit & ballons, a week of friends & family, G2, preparties @ McFadden, Philly Cheese Steaks etc.. You just had to be there that whole week in Philly.

I'm not sure what the MSG curfew today is (I heard it's 11:30pm, not 100% sure) but back in '03, Pearl Jam played till midnight and was charged $14k in fines? If the band starts earlier & the opening act play's a shorter set, there might be some surprises.

all signs point to no. the msg shows will be good, no doubt. you'll get a nice setlist. you'll get your 2.5 hour show. you won't get a philly 3 or 4 show tho. those are top 5% shows. very few make it to that catagory. it takes a special show to get up there.

The thing about blowing your load is that you have time to store up another and look to drop an even more intense load the next time !!
