The Flaming Lips do Dark Side of the Moon

I have listened to this album twice today. I got it just after Record Store Day but never got around to listening to it. It's fucking unbelievable.
For someone like me who grew up listening to Dark Side of the Moon, I at first cringed thinking that it was covered in it's entirety. I mean, how do you top the untoppable. DSOTM is the pinnacle of great albums. But after hearing the Flaming Lips version of the album, I have to applaud them. While paying tribute to the great Pink Floyd, they also made this album their own. Making dramatic changes to the songs yet keeping true to the original at the same time is no easy task. They pulled it off. Now I still like the original better (obviously) but this record will get many spins in the near future. Anyone else hear it? What are your thoughts?
BTW....it isn't just the Flaming Lips. I think the full title is The Flaming Lips Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches doing the Dark Side of the Moon.

That is cringe worthy IMO. I hate it. Maybe as a stand alone album rather than a remake it would have worked for me. Some of the music is good but not for this project. I dont feel it works. Infact I dont feel this is showing how much they love Floyd. I love Pink Floyd very much and would never do thid to any of their albums0

Big fan. It completely fits in now with their catalog of recent albums Embryonic, Soft Bulletin, and Yoshimi."FF, I've heard the droning about the Sawx being the baby dolls. Yeah, I get it, you guys invented baseball and suffered forever. I get it." -JearlPam09250

This is a great remake. Definitely within the Lips feel, but just enough of the original. The take on Breathe is a great way to start the album.
If you've got the time, here's a link to pro-shot videos of their NYE performance of Dark Side:

It fits with Embryonic, but I don't hear any of the Soft Bulletin or Yoshimi vibe. I was expecting it to be more like those albums. Especially since they do dark themes with such a postive sound on them, and I think DSOTM sets the standard for that sorta thing.
There are a few short glimmers of hope with it, but all in all it's overindulgent without being that good.0 -

I'd put it with Embryonic, or even Priest Driven Ambulance era lips. Not as polished as Yoshimi or Soft Bulletin (which isn't a bad thing)."You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

I should have clarified myself. Yes, not as polished as Yoshimi/Soft Bulletin. Much more like Embryonic than the other two. I guess I kinda break the Lips into two separate eras and DSOTM fits nicely with their later years.merkinball wrote:DewieCox wrote:FenwayFaithful wrote:Big fan. i got it on rsd but haven't listened to it yet. i heard it a few months ago online with video from some wizard of oz remake. it was decent but i don't think it's as good as most of their other work. i even considered not getting it but i have most of their other albums, except for embryonic because their website said they were releasing a mega deluxe vinyl version, now they say that might not come out

what are you but my reflection? who am i to judge or strike you down?

I didn't like it at first but it's grown on me, especially after seeing them play "Breathe" live on Fallon.0
