I hope these shows are good... but MSG 08 was nothing to write home about after all of the hype.

I hope this time around they really mix up the two nights there.

You know, it wasn't so long ago that a 30+ song, 3 hour, 3 encore pearl jam show would impress people, especially one that included covers of Love, Reign O'ver Me and All Along the Watchtower, and included the loudest crowd (save for maybe the next night) I've ever heard. But then again, if it doesn't sound phenomenal on bootleg, it wasn't that great a show

Haha... the way people talk from the east coast the MSG shows are 'epic' and the be all end all.

It had like 10-12 repeats between the two... not much that stuck out from any other setlist that tour...

Longer than most by a tiny bit, but nothing crazy...

And to top off my post I'll add...

    just sayin'

    :)

See, I think this is an expectations problem. 10-12 repeats over 30 songs when most bands play the same set every night? Pearl Jam never promised no repeats during either of the shows, and yes, those shows were absolutely epic. I've been to a few big ones (i.e. Mansfield 3 in '03, all of the other MSG shows, Albany '06, amongst quite a few others) and the only show I had more fun at than those was Philly 4 last year.

I also have to say that you had to be there to really appreciate it, and not in a flippant manner. I mean, the energy in the room between the band and the crowd is at a level that is almost incomprehensible. You can't see it on DVD or hear it on poor quality bootlegs, it's just something that you gotta experience...and having been to my share of shows (17 Pearl Jam and about 100 or so others), yes, it is special and epic and all that.

I dont think 10-12 repeats is unreasonable... I guess my point in that is I've seen more than a few comments of the earlier shows this tour where someone puts (and I'm quoting here) "7 repeats from last night. just sayin"

So 7 repeats in the midwest warrants a comment, but they talk about the MSG shows like they are above all others. And I was there in 08- the energy was pretty impressive, but the shows as a whole were (for me) middle of the road... longer than most but somewhat cookie-cutter setlist wise. And don't get me started on those backup singers! :)
  • on a good night there is no comparison to the magic that happens inside Madison Square Garden in the first half of the arena (including behind the stage). Is it at every show there? No. But its at a lot of em....Seen everyone from The Dead to Pearl Jam in that room, and we've been all over the world at venues- nothing compares when the energy is there and you are in the first half of that arena. Nothing
  • JL19851JL19851 Posts: 209
For me, the setlists were both really awesome. I don't go to the shows to see them play Bugs and Goat and Dirty Frank and such...to me, as long as the energy is there with the songs they do play, that is what makes a show great. As far as the energy from the band and the crowd and everything else surrounding those shows, really unparallelled. I don't hype the Garden for the sake of it being the Garden (I saw REM there last year and thought it was a mediocre show), but when that place roars there really is nothing like it, and it was that and then some both nights. Hell, I have never even come close to seeing that great a version of Better Man than they played night 2.
