Good street food in NYC

With the MSG shows coming up, I'm doing my first NY trip without parental assistance... which means, unfortunately, I'm eating on my own coin - which means cheaply. That said, I have a real passion for food, and like eating things with big, bold flavours. I also love stoner food  . Any advice from NYers on where I can eat well on a budget in the city? I know there must be hundreds and hundreds of places that fall under that category, but if people could share some favourites that'd be great!

Gray's Papaya right near MSG, cheap and good (hot dogs, smoothies, etc.)

Pretty much any pizzeria, get a huge slice really cheap.

Also, while McDonald's value meals sound like a good idea, you tend to pay a premium when in Manhattan, so I'd stay away.

in manhattan ... chinatown ... and don't buy the hot dogs ... if you're used to the street meat in toronto - you'll be disappointed with those things they sell down there ...

if you don't like chinese food - then your looking at kabob houses or places like that ...

Most places that sell gyros and/or falafels will taste great and be as cheap as McDonald's.

Don't get fooled by these tourists. Hit Mamoun's falafel on Macdougal St. for a real NYC cheap food experience.

For breakfast you can get a bagel and coffee off the cart for under $2, and lunch/dinner, falafel sandwiches for about $4. We do this all the time - can't be bothered to waste too much money on food.

There's a dosa cart around Washington square that I've always planned to try, but I'm never at the right place at the right time.

Momoun's Falafel down in the village.

BEST falafel, anywhere, hands down. Dirt cheap, and open until something insane like 4am. So small of a place, you'll have to eat outside on the street. It's located right where all the real record shops are (or were, I'm assuming they're still there). I think a huge falafel is something like $2.50 if I remember right. They have a website too.

I'm planning to go there after both MSG shows, like at 12:30am.

If you need a late night slice of pizza, there is (or was a number of years ago) a 24 hour pizza stand which is I believe up 8th from the garden... maybe 8th and 39th if I recall correctly. Just always were there for me in the middle of the night.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

  • I've seen the street food carts parked for the night in Soho... Rats everywhere after seeing that no way would I eat anything off a cart... Two pearl jam song titles in one sentence! :)

I would try lunch at Union Steet Cafe. Get there early sit at the bar as that's first come first served. Their soup is the best!
    Good luck!

Won't be during Even Flow... they played a badass EF one of the MSG nights last time they were there, and the Toronto EF us Torontonians were treated to was phenomenal as well. But yes, taking a shit during the show may very well be a distinct possibility

For a cheap snack, you can't lose with Nuts for Nuts. Just make sure you ask them to scoop from the spinning till or else they'll try to give you a cold sack of nuts.............
