I'm a guitar player looking to get into drums as well. I want a set to mess around with, but I know from guitar that quality goes a long way, so I'm looking at two used sets that they have near me. One is a used Yamaha Rydeen set but with no hardware or cymbals, or a used Pearl Export for a decent price. I know neither is top notch but whats the genuine consensus on these sets. I've read around and some people praise and some seem to find them very knockable, whats your advice? Also, I was originally going to go with a Pearl VBX new, but that seemed like alot of cash. Whats my best route? Thanks.

I know both are great brands for drums. Yamaha's are great. I'd go with that. What's the Yamaha set missing?

both are very good starter sets. go with the one that has the hardware. hardware packs can cost $200, so go with the one that comes with the hardware.

I had a Pearl Export as my second drumset for years. It was fine.

I'd recommend saving a bit on the drums with the hardware so you can "invest" in some decent cymbals that sound good. imo, good sounding cymbals can make an ok set sound good, but bad sounding cymbals can make a good set sound just ok or worse.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

Not sure what wood is within the Yamaha drums, but the Export had poplar wood for years, then just recently upgraded to maple or birch (can't remember). The poplar kits are okay for messing around with but they don't sound that great and you will likely get bored of them after a year or so.

Like the guy above said, don't be afraid to save up a bit more cash and buy some decent wood. I like Yamaha - Yamaha Tour Custom Maple drums would be a great beginner to mid-level drum set. A used kit of those won't be too bad.

Don't worry about good hardware at this point. You can always upgrade later. Just be sure the drums are of decent wood (i.e. maple or something) and not warped, then you can always buy new heads, better hardware, and a nice snare later on.

Happy shopping and let us know what you bought :D
