I'm not sure, but I started seeing those things when they started wearing those little ear sound things so I think they may have something to do with them.

There recording mics, i guess thats where the crowd noise comes from on the bootlegs, as everything else will be recorded through the mixing desk

No, they are actually cones for the frequencies of the in-ear monitors as someone suggested. This ensures a stable environment for the frequencies to come through with very very little to no audible interference from all the other electrical elements going on throughout the show. Gotta keep the signal clean for the guys so they can save their hearing. They do also use stage volume via monitors and wedges set up throughout the stage for a few reasons.....to feed off stage volume and give energetic shows that we know and love, as well as a backup source so they can hear themselves. The in-ears just ensure good clarity for their own signal while having everything else in the background as well.

My friend was going to see Eddie last night. Since he was in Vegas, I gave him 5 Grand to gamble with. I told him I wanted it all to go on Black. Bastard! PhillyCrownOfThorns-11-2-12

And to also save their ears from noise damage from playing night after night. What they hear in their ear is basicly what you hear on the boots. They may have their own level slightly higher or perhaps the drums and bass to keep time. They are unbelievable.
