Carlos Beltran and Andruw Jones are your new HOFers
some cheaters get in, some don’t.

don’t get me wrong…both are worthy IMO.
Jones was on the fence for me.  Beltran is not a HOFer.
Yeah I agree. Was hoping for Utley but knew it wasn’t gonna happen.
He's inching closer, took a big jump this year.
this whole “inching closer” is kind of dumb to me. Either vote for the guy or don’t. The voters can vote for ten guys.

just found out andruw was a wife beater…so we got a beater and a cheater….”character clause” is certainly selectively applied. 😡
The fact that Bonds isn't in is horseshit
I just want consistency when it comes to the “character clause.” Either value it or don’t.
I'm with you on the inching up thing, I never liked the not a first ballot thing. I understand moving guys off ballots if there are years when there are obvious ones like with Ichiro last year and Rivera when he got elected.
andruw jones went from 31 votes in 2018 to 333 votes in 2025. WTF?

and beltran finished in the top ten of MVP voting TWICE and never led any offensive category in his TWENTY year career.

    hall of above average.

The HOF is just a museum, really. Ppl wanna see dudes w numbers in there! You can't tell me everyone in there is a saint. If you don't wanna see Bonds in, dont visit the steroid wing.
I think that's the whole thing and you're already correct. Rose, Bonds, all those guys are already in the museum; just not in the Hall.

true, but they ought to be “Hall of Famers.” hell, eddie gaedel and max pitkin are probably somewhere in the museum area.

Kellerman and Bill Simmons had a good conversation on the yankees and all the labor stuff a couple months ago. A couple things in the labor situation that I thought was good...

The way to incentivize the the smaller market teams to spend and to be competitive is giving them a similar approach to the NBA where only the original team has the ability to pay them the most amount of money giving them a better chance of retaining stars. There's no incentive for them to pay big bucks for one guy which it might get them a few extra wins or make them a bit more competitive but is going to hurt the business. Having the ability to retain stars will give them a better chance at being competitive and more incentive to spend than just having a floor.

Also made the point that the Yankees are actually a poor team now with Dodgers and Mets being owned by the people they are and that this is a hobby for them and not where they actually made their money. For the Steinbrenner's the Yankees are their business. That said, F Hal.

That said, we're not seeing baseball next year. No shot.

The small market teams just lost their regional networks, are facing 60% reduction in their TV money, and they’re gonna sign these huge contracts that we are seeing?

Baseball reportedly lost $2 billion last year and Cohen stated he lost $350 million. The Mets had terrific attendance and Cohen is still spending. I can’t imagine he wants a salary cap.

More than half the teams lost their local TV network and with the replacement of mlb.tv they face losing the majority of their local money. It’s obvious that baseball has a significant financial problem and the small market teams are losing money. ESPN was willing to end their relationship with baseball until baseball offered them the out of market streaming rights. With the disappearance of over a half the games on regional sports networks, The future losses will only increase.

Fans that saying there should be a salary floor without a much higher revenue share, Are basically in favor of putting half the league into bankruptcy. if that’s what the players association wants then they ain’t exactly the sharpest tool in the shed.

The answer….a much much higher luxury tax. a team like the Dodgers spending 400 million should be paying at least half of that number back to the small market clubs and that money goes into a salary cap floor would make sense.

I think you are on the right track.  Probably a stiff luxury tax with sharing and some sort of guarantee it goes into payroll is likely the path of least resistance.

In a perfect world, we would see a socialized system similar to the NHL and NFL that has meaningful revenue sharing, a hard cap and floor based on an overall allotment of % of total revenue.  That would be tough in baseball though as it is so regionally-based and the revenue disparity is severe.  You also would need to wear down the MLBPA with an extended labor-stoppage.

I have said it before, but I would rather they tweak some rules and the structure around and move to a full 4-5 tier promotion-relegation system.  Keep it the wild-west, force teams to spend to stay in MLB.  Maybe a billionaire buys Charlotte or Nashville and puts a bunch of money in to level up.  There would be meaningful baseball in all corners of the US.  Maybe an ambitious guy buys Jacksonville or Corpus Christi and makes a run up a level or 2.

Lofton has a better WAR than Jones. More runs scored. 600 SB. More hits and a better BA. OPS+ is just 4 points off. Edmonds also had similar numbers to Jones. A better OPS+. I don't have too much of a problem with Jones. But if he had 300 hr he doesn't get in.

Lofton was half the fielder Jones was.  I also don't think Jones should be in either.

Edmunds was the king of making catches look difficult.

    Agree on Edmonds.
Fuck that guy.  Wait....wait....wait.....run and slide to catch.
Half of the CF would catch normally because they were paying attention and got a proper jump.

Whether he was good or not on defense doesn't take away from the offense. His WAR would be as high.

WAR takes into account defense as well as offense and baserunning

Yea. It wouldn't be as close if he was as bad as some might think.

    I agree with this take.

I'll say, though, Jones made playing center look effortless.

Jones was a world class fielder.  Might be why he got in?

    Crazy ways to parse stats.
Here....Joey Votto only popped up to the infield 8 times in 10 years.
