Crowd Surfing vs. Moshing: Which did you do back in the day?

Both trends really aren't around much now like they were in the 90s. But of the two, were you more of a mosher or a crowd surfer (or both or none)? I crowd surfed a few times, but didn't mosh ever. Got caught in a few pits, though and happy to be alive. This can be for PJ or any concert.

I tried to avoid moshing because nobody did it right. I loved to surf though. I was surfing at a Mudhoney show in Cleveland in 1998 and got dropped onto a Heineken bottle. Bloodied up my Gas Huffer shirt.....good times...goooood times.

that sucks and example a of crowd surfing actually being more dangerous than moshing. I never quite got moshing, come to think of it.

I crowd surfed during the Hartford 98 show After Eddie told everyone to dance in the aisles.
I actually got thrown over the baracade and had to jump right over because of security.

I was at that show and my friend from college was mixed up with the security mishap by the barricade at the end. Said it was chaos. And if memory serves, there was a mosh pit on the lawn. Crazy show.

    A little bit of both.

Pretty vivid memories of crowd surfing at the Umass Mullins center for LIVE and Green Day in 1993-1994.

Also some crowd surfing at the 1994 UMass spring concert. Was fun with The Violent Femmes.

I think I moshed a bit at those shows, but more later with Rage Against the Machine, and some others in the mid 1990's.

do you mean that crowd surfing/moshing isnt around at pearl jam shows or at all? because theyre are gratuitous amounts of both at almost every hardcore/punk show ive been to

not really around at PJ shows as much and I'd say it's not prevalant at concerts like it was in the 90s. No doubt it still exists but with less frequently.

Back in the day..... I moshed. And I just got home from a show that my band played and we had a pretty nice pit going, someone broke a rib actually. Ok, that part sucks, but when you look around and it's a room full of dudes in Minor Threat t-shirts, you need to watch out..that's all I'm sayin'.

I think you all talk about US gigs, here in Europe there isnt any seats so we do both all the time. I think its not a REAL Pearl Jam gig without it.

pj will never have GA at non festival shows here. to many drunken douchebags would join the fanclub just to be dicks in the pit and most long time members would be upset and rightfully so. pj knows this so that's why pj concerts will never be GA. also most people don't really know the rules of moshing or care for a fellow american. me personally i never really moshed nor crowd surfed, i mostly did slam dancing at hardcore shows. the wall of death is fun, NOT.

I totally miss moshing back in the day. Had a lot of fun here in Cleveland in the pit at several Face Value concerts. I also had some memorable moments from Rollins Band, Pearl Jam, The Dead Milkmen, Lollapalooza,Pigface, and a few old old Nine Inch Nails show. Good times...

But being a girl, there were some not so fun times too  The most important thing I learned: SPORTS BRA! And don't make your hair easy to grab.

Discussions about moshing always remind me of this article I found a number of years ago. It's pretty funny.

Are we talking in general or just at PJ shows?

Moshing in general is still going strong i think. (just go to any heavy metal show. I still do it occasionally). Never done crowd surfing though. Was always afraid someone would try and take my shoe (seen that happen). Never really noticed it at any PJ shows, guess surfing would seem more appropriate at a PJ show though.

I used to crowd surf at festivals all the time. It's a lot of fun if it's done right but now there are too many dicks around now that kick out at people when they surf or grab at girls if the girls are surfing.

The last time I crowd surfed was during a Rocket From The Crypt set at a festival in 95. I came from quite far back but as I got to the pit, the crowd split apart and I got dropped flat on my back on the floor. The crowd surged forward again and ended up moshing on top of me! I got kicked unconscious and cracked a couple of ribs and my cheekbone. Apparently one of the security guys saw me fall and dived into the crowd to pull me out, the next thing I remember is waking up in the First Aid tent backstage. It was scary as hell.

I'll still get as close to the front at GA shows as I can - and if people do want to crowd surf I'll help to lift them up - but I haven't done it myself since then.
