Who doesn't love release? Wash might be my favorite opener...got it at Ottawa in 05 and this past year in Cleveland. I am a fan of Can't Keep as well...still waiting for Of the Girl!
Did you come to CLE all the way from Istanbul just for the show?
In 09' I scheduled my annual trip back home right after I saw them at the 02 in london so I could catch them in Seattle for two nights and this year I first booked Nijmegen and Berlin, but when they scheduled their US dates, my stomach hurt at the thought of missing my "hometown" show in Buffalo basically 7 years after my true addiction began when I saw my first show there (5/2/03). I wasn't planning on going to Cleveland, but one of my best friends from home and I were sitting around on Saturday (the day before the show) and we said "hey, why not make the most of this and go to Cleveland as well
So ive been quite lucky...these trips have pretty much cleaned me out but its been worth every cent...getting to see them in multiple cities/countries/continents has been something I will never ever forget...and certainly not regret!
- I'm shocked that "Unthought Known" hasn't been a Backspacer-era opening song favorite yet!
My thoughts exactly! Bring it on...
Mine so far have been:
Why Go (Slane 1993)
Sometimes (Cork 1996)
Release (Dublin 1996)
Sometimes (Dublin 2000)
Worldwide Suicide (London Astoria 2006)
Inside Job (Dublin 2006)
Long Road (London 2007)
Long Road (Copenhagen 2007)
Release (Nijmegen 2007)
Long Road (Manchester 2009)
Release (London 2009)
Never thought I'd say this given how long I was aching to hear it, but I could do without Long Road this year - 3 out of the last 5...
In fact, 4 shows upcoming, I'd rather not hear any of the openers I've already heard.
So after those 4 shows, no such luck. Long Road twice. So now 5 of my last 9 shows have opened with it. Good thing I think it's an amazing song...
Long Road (Dublin 2010)
Sometimes (Belfast 2010)
Given to Fly (London 2010) - at least I did get one new one

I'm waiting for more of you to have some crazy ass openers like:

Rearviewmirror (somewhere in CA 2000)
I Am Mine (Albany 2003)
Nothing As It Seems (London? 2000)

06: Camden, Washington DC, 08: Va Beach, Washington DC
09: Philly 2+3, 10: Bristow, 11: East Troy PJ20 1+2, 13: Baltimore, Charlottesville
I've read many posts over the years, but this is the first time I've felt moved to post.
I agree that the opener (and my anticipation of what it will be) is a special experience. It has always been a favorite thing for me at the hundreds of concerts I've been to (10 of them PJ).
I loved both 2010 openers I saw -- Small Town (a first for me) and So You Wanna Be Rock and Roll Star (probably a one and only). And I saw them in DC a few years back open with Release, which still drifts through my mind often. But in 2003 in Dallas I saw them open with Alive -- which was crazy, unexpected and exhilarating. That opener and a great performance of RVM that night (at only my second PJ show) sold me on seeing them as much as I could the rest of my life.

8 openers in 16 shows. Not the greatest luck, but I'll say the only time I was ever disappointed with an opener was when they repeated Severed Hand (and the 2nd and 3rd songs) on the second night in E Rutherford in '06. And I could never not enjoy Release as an opener. Never.
I am lost, I'm no guide, but I'm by your side. I am right by your side.
Stats are updated through the North America 2011 tour.
A few new observations:
- "Oceans" is becoming mega rare. It opened only 1 show of the past 70 (though it was played mid-set in Melbourne in 2009) and has only opened 2 of the past 99 shows dating back to the end of the 2006 tour.
- "Hard to Imagine" has not opened a show since Backspacer was released.
- In 2009-2011, you've had a 50% chance of getting one of the following as your opener: "Why Go," "Long Road," "Release," "Sometimes," or "Small Town."
- Avocado openers accounted for 24 of 81 openers in 2006 ("Severed Hand," "World Wide Suicide," "Wasted Reprise," and "Inside Job"). Since then, only "Severed Hand" has opened a show (Camden 2008). None of them have opened in 2009-2011.
And Chad, I loved your "favorite Pearl Jam song" countdown from a little while back.
00: Va Beach, 03: Bristow, 04: Reading, 05: Atlantic City 2x
06: Camden, Washington DC, 08: Va Beach, Washington DC
09: Philly 2+3, 10: Bristow, 11: East Troy PJ20 1+2, 13: Baltimore, Charlottesville
The pattern with openers was odd this tour. Besides Long Road and Release in their classic opening slots, they took a different approach, opening with things like Go and Given To Fly, and repeating Elderly Woman three times in the initial slot. I don't know. I prefer the tried and true openers (Sometimes, Of The Girl, etc.) to something like GTF, which works well mid-set. On the other hand, if they are going to play Elderly Woman as often as they do, I guess its good in the opening slot. Get it out of the way ... :P
I have the following:
Corduroy
Release
Do The Evolution
Better Man
Long Road
Long Road
Hard To Imagine
Release
Long Road
Release
Given To Fly
Long Road
Go
Small Town
Given To Fly
I feel pretty good about them, but it would be sweet to get Sometimes, Wash, Oceans, Of The Girl or Can't Keep.

I love the stats! There is nothing quite like the feelings of the opening song cascading across the audience at a PJ show... I just made a playlist of the Set Openers with my Live bootlegs collection, and am happily reliving the experience. Thanks for putting this together!

My favorite opener by far was Corduroy in my favorite show by far. The first show I went to they opened with Release and it was so good that I hoped to never hear the song live again because it would never match that moment. It became the song I've heard them open with the most. I'm dying to hear both Oceans and Long Road in the three shows I'll be at this tour.
Hi, I host a Pearl Jam Podcast. We go back to some of the classic shows in their history and break down the entire setlist front to back. From historic perspective, to performances, to setlist construction, to fan stories. We do our best to capture the magic that is their live act and help you relive those memories, or if you weren't there, maybe turn you on to a show you've never heard before.
Live On 4 Legs can be found on Apple Podcast, Spotify and any other major podcast platform. But please support our website and check out the episodes archived there. Oh, and the Concertpedia as well (for you Five Horizons and Two Feet Thick fans, we've picked up where they've left off)

CHI2 09 - Hard To Imagine
Hartford 10 - Unthought Known
MSG 1 10 - Sometimes
MSG 2 10 - Corduroy
PJ20 1 - Release
PJ20 2 - Wash
Philly 12 - Go
Wrigley - Release
My favorite opener by far was Corduroy in my favorite show by far. The first show I went to they opened with Release and it was so good that I hoped to never hear the song live again because it would never match that moment. It became the song I've heard them open with the most. I'm dying to hear both Oceans and Long Road in the three shows I'll be at this tour.
