i was wondering about this, thought id get some others opinions...

what if pearl jam re recorded an albums worth of older songs, to capture their current state...

for example, how would you like a studio version of porch the way they play it now or present tense, the way its changed so much from the cd version from 1996... others as well, like betterman, given to fly etc..

what would you think of this? what others would you like to hear re recorded. there are certian ones id say yes, others no... but, just thinking outloud.

crazy mary from the studio would be nice too.

I wouldn't be truely interested in them re-recording old stuff but I would love a studio album of the tracks they cover live

i'd much rather they work on new songs.

studio albums are fine, but it's all about the live show.

Yes there is, I had not remembered that to be honest. But you get what Im saying anyway. I dont the original idea but if they were maybe just goofing in the studio and happened to put together a little record of covers I would not have a problem with it. Though I would always want new PJ material first

i dont mean record old songs instead of new ones! im giving a hypothetical here!

is there no song you think sounds way better now live than the album version?

and im not sure on that answer, is there a studio version of crazy mary??

It was a benefit for Victoria Williams, a cd of other artists singing her songs

It's so hard keeping up with boots, other music and life in general I barely have time to listen to the studio albums but when I do I only want the originals for nostalgia reasons. I get the OP's idea but how often do you see a great movie re-made when the original couldn't have been bettered anyway. I don't think recording Ten again for example would ever capture anything that special. Like a boot from a show where nobody turned up. :D

    HI-O!

I would be up for it, I've thought about it before. I also thought about Pearl Jam doing their version of "Garage Inc." where they do a whole album worth of covers.

I didn't care much for the songs that were re-recorded for Lost Dogs so I definitely wouldn't want to hear a re-recorded version of Alive or Better Man. But I get what you're driving at: it'd be cool if the album version of Corduroy had a guitar solo or if the album version of Porch was longer and stuff like that. But that's why ya have all the live versions I guess.

Now on the flipside this, there's a few songs I'd like to see be played in a fashion closer to their album versions. For instance, I would LOVE them to slow down Do The Evolution and for Ed to sound menacing like he does on the album. And Even Flow gets faster every year.
