MetroNorth-MSG

I'm traveling to MSG1 from Western MA and plan on taking the MetroNorth into NYC.
I was planning on catching the train in New Haven but someone mentioned that it is better to leave from either Stamford or Stratford, I don't remember which one they said. Their reasoning was that there is a safe parking garage at that station and the ride takes approximately the same time.
So for those of you that are familiar with the train, which station would you leave from?
Also, is it better to buy tickets in advance and how far is MSG from Grand Central?
Thanks

MSG is really close to Grand Central. I think 2 subway stops away.
also sent you a PM...you can pruchase at the machines on the day as well.

too bad House of Brews isn't close to MSG like it is the Radio City... 80 different beers of awesomeness!
exactly.
both Stamford and New Haven have covered closed parking garages, so safety is not an issue here. Also, the price of ticket difference is less than the gas you'll burn on your car getting from New Haven to Stamford. (the train runs from New Haven to Stamford to New York). The only advantage i can think of of leaving from Stamford is that there are more frequent late night trains to Stamford (2 per hour?) than to New Haven (1 per hour).
as for tickets, get to the station 10 mins early and buy at the ticket machine. DONT buy on the train; they cost a fortune. try to get on a train with Barcar. really cheap drinks (2 bucks a beer).
