Every morning...

I watch the beams
peek through the leaves in the shaded yard
reflecting off of the morning dew on the patchy new grass
the squirrels never seem to leave
My dog is not doing a very good job with them,
but you won't see a rabbit for miles

I read a chapter and sip my cold water
glancing up now and again
at the ever rising sun
Like clockwork,
I think that a cigarette would complete this moment
but, I refrain

My niece starts searching the house for me
first my bedroom, then the living room
I wonder when she will skip the search and go straight for the deck
there is such an inviting presence to her
always a warm, groggy hug
sleepy eyes and matted blonde hair

We sit for a few more minutes
take in the the chilly, heavy morning air
appreciate all that we have and the overwhelming
beauty that surrounds us
hope and life for the brand new day
...until I am asked for warm chocolate milk.

The day begins,
most don't continue as smoothly as they started
but I wouldn't want anything less
Someday this innocence will be lost
the truth about parent's selfishness will surface
and no matter how hard I try
I won't be able to cushion the blow
that will someday hit full force
like it did for me

So familiar, but equally unique.. It makes me wonder how far any person is away from the next.. good job!

  • Thank you both for the kind words.

I think that we all have stories or find ourselves in situations that so many others can relate to,
even when we feel like no one would understand.
The world can become a lonely place when dealing with things...
we need to all make sure that we are there for others.
    Always. No questions asked.

There is my Delilah moment for the week!

This is really something... it is quite amazing! I read it in the morning with the early sun peering over my shoulder, and loved every word!
Pepper- I am faith without religion, without bruised knees and pleas for forgiveness...
