*Imagine If The Tea Party Was Black*....Tim Wise

Give this a chance and do tell what you think and this came to mind when some on here have said there *we are not a racist country*. What do you honestly think would be the reaction in this country if what Mr Wise writes would occur?
Let’s play a game, shall we? The name of the game is called “Imagine.” The way it’s played is simple: we’ll envision recent happenings in the news, but then change them up a bit. Instead of envisioning white people as the main actors in the scenes we’ll conjure - the ones who are driving the action - we’ll envision black folks or other people of color instead. The object of the game is to imagine the public reaction to the events or incidents, if the main actors were of color, rather than white. Whoever gains the most insight into the workings of race in America, at the end of the game, wins.

So let’s begin.

He continues here in his writings....

*Imagine If The Tea Party Was Black*....

Tim Wise is among the most prominent anti-racist writers and activists in the U.S. Wise has spoken in 48 states, on over 400 college campuses, and to community groups around the nation. Wise has provided anti-racism training to teachers nationwide, and has trained physicians and medical industry professionals on how to combat racial inequities in health care. His latest book is called *Between Barack and a Hard Place*.

Wow. Excellent piece. Thanks so much for posting. The conclusion, I think, is especially important and well-said:
Protest is only seen as fundamentally American when those who have long had the luxury of seeing themselves as prototypically American engage in it. When the dangerous and dark “other” does so, however, it isn’t viewed as normal or natural, let alone patriotic. Which is why Rush Limbaugh could say, this past week, that the Tea Parties are the first time since the Civil War that ordinary, common Americans stood up for their rights: a statement that erases the normalcy and “American-ness” of blacks in the civil rights struggle, not to mention women in the fight for suffrage and equality, working people in the fight for better working conditions, and LGBT folks as they struggle to be treated as full and equal human beings.

And this, my friends, is what white privilege is all about. The ability to threaten others, to engage in violent and incendiary rhetoric without consequence, to be viewed as patriotic and normal no matter what you do, and never to be feared and despised as people of color would be, if they tried to get away with half the shit we do, on a daily basis.

I would like to know the feelings about this of the people on this board who support the Tea Party and who deny racism in the United States. I would also like to know whether or not the Tea Party folks support the things he listed. (I didn't even know half of that had happened. :( )

What happens if the TEA Party rally that I went to was lead by a black man with a keynote speaker a black woman? In fact the local TEA Party leader is a black man.

Obiously nothing much happened or you would have reported something here I'm sure of that. You may have been led by a black man, your local Tea Party leader might be a black man with a keynote speaker being a black woman BUT are they speaking to 90+ percentage black or of color membership? I DON"T think so.

Now, if they ALL were speaking to an of color or black membership of Tea Party protestors what would have been the reaction across the country to this protest of a white President, that's the question?

i am imagining that the tea party is 90% black and for some reason i can not imagine the republicans courting them like they are the tea party with its current racial make up. i am also imagining a very high level of security at their rallies like in the civil rights era...

  • All this is is just another example of the left doing what they do best. Taking things out of context, twisting the language and playing the race card.

What a joke. He refers to what if it were blacks that were carrying AK 47's ? First of all you can't even buy a fucking AK47. 2nd of all it was a black man that was packing at one of those town hall meetings last summer and the MSM deliberately only showed his back.http://www.averagebro.com/2009/08/so-mu ... d-gun.html

    Wise says
Imagine that a rap artist were to say, in reference to a white president: “He’s a piece of shit and I told him to suck on my machine gun.” Because that’s what rocker Ted Nugent said recently about President Obama.

Well I guess he forgot about what young Jeezy said and Jay Z at the Party Obama had the night he won the election.
"I know ya’ll thanking a lot of people right now. I want to thank two people. I want to thank the motherfucker overseas that threw two shoes at George Bush, and I want to thank the motherfuckers who helped them move they shit up out the White House. Get it moving bitch. My president is motherfucking black, nigga."/quote]

    and Jay Z said
My president is black, in fact he’s half white. So even in a racist mind he’s half right. If you’ve got a racist mind it’s alright. My president is black, but his house is all white. My president is black, in fact he’s half white. So even in a racist mind he’s half right. If you’ve got a racist mind it’s alright. My president is black, but his house is all white. Never thought I’d say this shit, baby I’m good. You can keep your pussy because I don’t want no more Bush. No more war. No more Iraq. No more white lies, my president is black."
    /quote]

    http://rudepundit.blogspot.com/2009/01/ ... ucket.html
Imagine that a black pastor, formerly a member of the U.S. military, were to declare, as part of his opposition to a white president’s policies, that he was ready to “suit up, get my gun, go to Washington, and do what they trained me to do.” This is, after all, what Pastor Stan Craig said recently at a Tea Party rally in Greenville, South Carolina./quote]

Um does Rev Jermiah Wright ring a bell ? Or did he forget about him and the fact that Obama attended his church for 20 years ????

    Wise says...
Imagine that black protesters at a large political rally were walking around with signs calling for the lynching of their congressional enemies. Because that’s what white conservatives did last year, in reference to Democratic party leaders in Congress.

I have another question... Is pearl jam a racist band ? I mean Hey... I hardly see any black people if any at all at all the shows I've been to. It's not just shows in the south cos I saw them in Chicago last summer and I don't recall seeing any blacks,so surley they must be. So that would mean we all belong to a racist fan club to wouldn't ?
    Of course not....
Did it ever occur to any of you that the reason you don't see many people of color at the Tea parties is becuase since the 60's most minorities have always voted democrat and most people at the tea parties are either republican, conservative,or Independent.
But to answer your question... Hell yeah I would.

yes pearl jam is a racist band... now i have heard it all...fact is you can make that case for the majority of rock bands, the same as you can say that gangsta rappers are racist if there are not many whites in the audience..i am not saying that by the way, just refuting your point...

  • My point was... by saying the tea party is a racist group just cos there are very few people of color is just as moronic as saying that pj is a racist band,or like you put it rap is racist music cos more blacks listen to rap than whites do.

there is really no comparison between a rock band playing shows and a group of people that are confused by the issues, holding up signs with obama in a hitler moustache and protesting taxes when 95% of them got tax cuts last year...no comparison at all..

Actually, PJ may be even worse then the Tea Party because not only is the PJ audience mostly white people, but they tend to be males as well. Could Pearl Jam actually be The Man?

I think the power of comprehension has escaped you this morning. No one is saying the Tea Party is a racist group because they have few members of color. People are saying they are a racist group because they promote racist ideas. And this article is saying that this country would recognize these ideas as racist if they weren't being espoused primarily by the race that's in power.

What racist ideas is the Tea Party promoting?

what racist ideas? care to elaborate? Don't just give me examples of a few racists that happen to attend rallies, but tell me the racist ideas that are espoused by the tea party? What is racist about their platform?

Since I'm not the one making this claim, I'll have to leave it to others to explain. (Though I believe examples are provided in the article the OP cited. Or you could just go back and read aerial's posts. ;) ) I was merely explaining the line of reasoning to those who haven't eaten their Wheaties this morning.

How is that a gross mis quote ? It's clearly a verse from the song WAR...
If you really want to get technical. it was actully a speech given by emperor Hali Salasi in 1935 to the league of nations.

okay maybe I should have said an inappropriate use of a quote

using the line from a speech to the league of nations (as you kindly pointed out), a line that symbolizes and speaks out against racism and oppression..... to prove some point you have about the tea party not being a racist movement.... is wrong IMO

edit....BTW you basically say in your post that "people of color" are uneducated on the issues and vote party lines..... which is a huge generalization that you make about other races, then quote a line that speaks about not seeing color.... I could easily say the same for rural whites folks as well, you know the ones attending the tea party rallies
