GW too far north and you would have to deal with that horrible Cross Bronx. Where on LI are you leaving from? At 5pm traffic will be a bitch, no matter which way you go. Best bet may be to take LIE through the city. Or LIRR and then the Path or NJ Transit to the arena.
  • coming in from the setauket/stonybrook area...i want to avoid taking the train...i'm also humoring the possibility of taking the southern state across staten island

Southern state option means Belt and Staten Island, both of those could be nightmare also. Best bet I think is LIE into city, then either Holland or Lincoln depending on the traffic.
  • what I would do is park in Nassau County and take the train from there.

i work in nassau and live in the bronx, and i do the ss to cross isl over the throgs to the cross bx. takes 30 mins. i can drive as fast as i want until i hit the cbx.....at which point if i were continuing to the gw might take me another 2 hours. every day of the week. driving at 5pm from that far out in suffolk i have one suggestion, dont go. unless you go by train.

for the ev solo i took the train from babylon to penn. caught an express train..they run pretty frequent at that time going into the city (just about an hour). from penn its like not even 10 minutes to newark penn and like a 5 minute walk to the prudential. then at night babylon still has many frequent trains up until about 2. i know its like about 30 min from babylon to setauket. ronkonkoma line probably has frequent ones too. done than many times last year...dont forget the traffic sucks EVERYWHERE. southern state sucks once you get into nassau and people can't drive...i just find the train is easier as long as you catch it...
