What's cooler: Vinyl or Cassette Tapes?

I know for a while vinyl was the in-thing and has made a comeback, but in reading the Checkpoint Charlie thread, I think the 90s generation cherished cassette tapes more than vinyl. I know I have the Atlanta 94 tapes still somewhere as well as when Vedder played DJ and gave out his home phone number and other nuggets.

So here's my question: Do you cherish your vinyl collection more or cassette tapes?

Vinyl. Nothing sucks more than trying to find a song on a cassette tape. FF-RW.....FF.....RW....FF...FF.....RW...ah fuck, almost had it.

i gave away my vs tape. that's how little i cared for it once i got the CD. in 3 hours i'll know if i won the Vs vinyl from the auction - but the person who outbid me for lost dogs is hellbent on winning this one as well and i can't monitor it from work :(

Vinyl collection! I was kinda disapointed seeing all those Neil Young & Metallica vinyl bootlegs of complete show's pressed on LP. Nothing for Pearl Jam. So Unofficial CD bootleg collecting was the way to go. Lately i've been seeing a few bootlegs pressed on LP. Pretty much too late as these sources were directly from CD > vinyl. The Neil Young, Metallica & Jimi Hendrix vinyl bootlegs were directly sbd source > vinyl. *drools

Living in the East Coast of Canada, where there isn't a huge Pearl Jam fan base population & tape trading was pretty low, many of us just passed around Unofficial Bootleg CD's > cassette tapes. We didn't have Audio CDR burners. I didn't mind then collecting cassettes, cause it was the only way I could hear live Pearl Jam @ school & on the bus each day. But totally wanted the Original Silver CD Bootlegs. Taz Records was our lord & savior place. My lunch money would directly go each week to buying a Pearl Jam Bootleg CD. I was pretty obsessed with Bootlegs. I still am today! 8-)

Vinyl! cassettes were only practical in the 90s because there were no ipods. Vinyl sounds and looks cooler than any other medium

Tapes have no legs! I have a soft spot for cassettes, as ten on tape was my introduction to PJ a loooong time ago, but that's a good case in point - I listened to it so much that I wore it out. I have since listened to ten many many times on vinyl and it's still as good as new, if you take care of vinyl it seems to last forever, but due to the wear and tear nature of cassettes, no matter how you take care they eventually wear out.

I did recently come accross some photos of me with my cassette walkman, lets face it, cassettes are awesome, but vinyl still rules my world

I only have a tape player in my car and I rock LOTL, Vitalogy and Best of Split Enz on rotation

I grew up with 45's, then 33 rpm LP's, then 8-Tracks, then cassettes, then CD's, then MP3's, now back to LP's.

The coolest thing for me was, and is again, opening that new LP, looking at the cover art, looking anything that was included, like a lyric sheet, and then playing it for the very first time.

    Vinyl is final.

  • the sound on cassette is piss. Plus the inconvenience factor of rewinding, fastforwarding, etc. I still have only a few cassettes, but they are "special".

I still have the tapes I used to have but they're mostly all lost or put away somewhere never to be heard again. They were mostly all copies off other tapes/CDs. I was 10 when I got a CD player and that's about when I started buying albums and used tapes for mixes. There is no argument to be made for sound as CD's are better and the packaging is better for CD's. I was quite happy leaving tapes behind.

There is an argument to be made for the sound, artwork, etc for vinyl which is why it is seeing renewed popularity. Tapes don't have that and therefore are not likely to see the same comeback.

Urban sound exchange in Moncton had boots as well, but sadly not vinyl.

We had Urban Sound Exchange here too in Halifax. Then later bought out by CD Plus. They used to carry a few bootlegs. Prices were cheaper but their cases were opened. I never liked shopping there. They are like EB Games. You check the shelves and you want to pick up that 'NEW' cd/video game. The clerk pulls out the discs from their cabinet and puts it in the open case. Sells it to you new, not used. It's not new if the wrapping clear case/sticker is open. Urban Sound Exchange & EB Games said, it sure is. I never shopped @ these stores again. Anything cd jewel case or video game case opened, while the clerk is searching for your disc, is not new.
  • I have to admit that I miss going to Bill Clarks Music Haven in South Shore, Ma and spend like $20 for 3 or 4 bootleg cassettes from the 90s. There was something special from each tape from the recorders experience and I do like it when artists let you record their shows to listen to. Still can't do that w/Vinyl or CDs for the person going to the show (not including soundboard). CDs of course are more practial and their is a romanticized allure to the vinyl comeback, but I still have love for my cassettes from the mid 90s!

One of my 7th grade students a couple years ago made me a mix tape as a Christmas present. In this day and age, I thought that was the coolest thing in the world

I wish I still had all my vinyl's from back in the day!! Now I'm on a quest to find cool albums at every garage sale I find. I've found some of my fav. bands and some I've picked up just cause I love the artwork. There's nothing like that feeling of holding a great find in your hands. Ahh...the memories it brings.
