Does Honesty Work With The Employers Of Today

My scenario...I work as a support staff for a school board and we fill out a vacation schedule for the year, and if we want changes we must email our supervisor for approval and they will email the approval back to us, so I did this and got the approval. So now I'm being told I can't take that day because they have PD Day( Professional Development Day ) seminars set up, these include a guest speaker, networking time and a couple of work shops, none of it has anything to do with my job. For 16 years I've did everything by the rules, never called in sick unless i was sick, did my job well and had my vacation changed according to policy. What is the incentive to be honest? I should have just called in sick. I just needed to vent, this just pisses me off.

I've been caught in similar situations before, requesting a day off (month's in advance) then not getting it because something pops up. then if you call in sick, your screwed because everyone knows what youre doing. Being a good employee really sux sometimes!

Well I do have a union and they are looking into, but it just pisses me off because they made such a big deal about these rules a year ago, I followed them to a tee and they want to disregard them. Your right it sucks.

I wonder if it's worth being a good employee anymore.

I think most employer's take it for granted, to be honest. They forget the fact that good honest hard working people are HARD to come by!

although this is shit, unfortunately employers have the right to dictate holidays to their staff. :(
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

Being a good employee is valued I think but those in power will do what you let them do, what they can get away with. They will take advantage of a good employee. If you are on vacation that day and it was already agreed upon and accepted I would tell them I was unavailable that day. Like sorry, out of town plans can not change.
I have others depending on me and have spent money planning. I would be civil but firm if this is important to you.

In general, it all depends on the company/supervisors....

But in your situation, that sucks... they make you request your time so far in advance, and then change their minds. Can you embellish the reason that you need the day off (medical testing, family obligation, etc)?
