Just bought two new sets of headphones, one casual, one heavier. All of a sudden, the left side of both earphones doesn't work. Seems to work fine with my small external speakers and my docking station. Could there be some setting I don't know about that could be screwing up the balance with the headphones?
You can spend your time alone, re-digesting past regrets, oh
Or you can come to terms and realize
You're the only one who cannot forgive yourself, oh
Makes much more sense, to live in the present tense

I know it sounds counter intuitive, but I think apple designed the jack to fit their 3.5 mm multimedia plug. It is the same diameter but is longer to allow for video-out and (potentially) voice-in. For example, I have a 3rd gen iPod (the iPod photo) and it was (if I'm not mistaken) the first one to have video-out capabilities for showing still photos on analog monitors. Later iterations of design refined the outer case of the iPod so that the headphone jack was no longer on a flat surface, but now on a slightly curved surface which doesn't grip the headphone jack as well, or allow for the jack to be seated as well.
It might also be that the connectors on the inside of the jack have gotten bent/flattened out, and no longer make good contact with the headphone plug.
This link might provide more specific directions on steps to take: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/. You will have to drill down further with the specifics about which model you have and then search the support strings, but on the whole, Apple's support articles are pretty helpful.
Hope this helps.
