stray dogs, butterflies and crowbars

the air seemed lighter today
the birds sang
and a stray dog
shared my lunch with me
we played catch with chips
he liked his belly rubbed
it was clear that he also
carried the scars of his past, some visible, most were not
a butterfly landed on his back
and then his nose
( ever see a dog go cross eyed? )
I laughed out loud
tossed him another piece of lunch meat
and he seemed to smile
the stray had such personality
he wore his hard times well
and held his head high
I decided he was going to come home with me

two cars stopped on the side street
they were 50 feet away
my new friend snapped to attention
aware, on guard
the men from the cars started yelling
one hit the others car with a crowbar
the fight was on
it ended as quickly as it began
one car sped off
the man on the ground picked himself up
and also sped away

I looked around
my friend was gone
scared off by the outburst of violence
humanity at its ,….. what? worst?
no, just humans being human
I stayed there an extra 30 minutes waiting for my new friend,
I’ll call him Monty, to come back
he didn’t
I’ve decide I’ll go back to that spot each day
until I see him again
I need a new friend,
and Monty needs a home

he liked to have his belly rubbed,
and who will do that if I am unable to find him?
Peace, Love.
