Sea Fishing - any hints

Last year some mates and myself went fishing, first of all on the beach near our campsite, then the next day woke at five and chartered a boat. I was the only one on board who didn't catch a dam thing. I had a minor success the night before on the beach when I caught some mackrel, but on the boat nada. Any tips Would be appreciated thanks

PS as 'weapons speciatist' (I brought along the kukri to gut the fish) I was a little red because of this failure
Also we did eat all the fish we caught - mackrel marinaded in teriaki is the bomb
