Is it just right timing to try to get tickets the day of a show, or is there a method to it?

In arenas, groups of tickets are not put on sale on either side of the stage until the tour's lighting and sound are put up that day. Any tickets in the area held that is not badly obsurred by equipment are put on sale the day of the show, usually sometime after 1pm. In addition, band tickets that they don't need for their guests are also put on sale in the afternoon. It can happen hours later than 1pm, but that's a relatively safe time to start asking at the box office.

In amphitheaters no sections are held, since they know all the seats there are good. So the only tickets that should pop up there are band releases.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

Would you have to go to the box office only or could you get them online?

I got tickets in the 2ND row of the pit the day of the show online. This was for PJ in Camden NJ.

pretty much all events. scalpers may be aware of this so you may need to check frequently.

i think box offices may try to put them for sale to people at the box offices first though.

call the box office and ask "do tech releases go on sale at the box office first?" and they should give you a straight answer.

I don't know of any method, but the one time I did this, I wanted to see U2 in Montreal, and couldn't get tickets. On the day of, tried, and tried and tried, and finally around 3pm a decent ticket popped up. I grabbed it, and was in the car by 3:30 on my way. I think you just have to keep trying as much as you have time for.
