The first time i saw the title I thought of the movie *They Live* The art of TV broadcasting subliminal messages.

This reminds of the Michael Franti song while with DHOH....
    Television Drug Of A Nation

Re: Television, drug of a nation

Television The Drug Of The nation :)

*We CAN bomb the World to pieces, but we CAN'T bomb it into PEACE*...Michael Franti

*MUSIC IS the expression of EMOTION.....and that POLITICS IS merely the DECOY of PERCEPTION*
    .....song_Music & Politics....Michael Franti

*The scientists of today think deeply instead of clearly. One must be sane to think clearly, but one can think deeply and be quite INSANE*....Nikola Tesla(a man who shaped our world of electricity with his futuristic inventions)

  • that video and the author seem a little paranoid to me. I think the basic statement "the media controls your mind" is at least partially true, but I think Chomsky gives a more rational view of it and probably the most complete explanation in Manufacturing Consent.

Here is the introduction (part 1):

Not familiar with the A Moving Train moniker yet? :)

About the clip in the OP, there are ways to explain the convergence in tastes, art and so forth without invoking world order conspiracy stuff. Hollywood is a ruthless profit-driven industry, granted. Media have been and still are used for propaganda purposes, granted.

That "they" use movies to familiarize us with stuff before "they" decide to put it in play is a tad paranoid I'd say. More likely, after ideas are presented, more people become aware of them, and work on the possibilities. How many NASA innovations have been preceded by scifi authors? A great deal of them. Why? You can't make something of it if noone have expressed theories about it. Either through the scientific process or through fiction. No theories, no tests, no progress. That makes more sense than the guild of scifi-writers being in league with aliens and gradually letting some things slip out for an ominous purpose. (Which would be the equivalent more or less)

TV do influence us, no doubt. And it's role in defining "the normal" is not to be trifled with. But is it really any different or more potent than all the other machinations humans use to distinguish rank and social status? Probably not. I see it as just another arena where this can happen. I can recommend the work of the renowned French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, and in particular "The distinction" for elaboration on this point.

Anywho, I need food, so I'll leave it there.

  • I love the section in Fall of the Republic where it is explained that spots stadiums were built to give men an outlet for their innate tribalism. If men are emotionally involved in spectator sports, they are less likely to be involved in real life society and politics.

I have no idea if that is true, but it's very interesting. I daresay it applies to concerts and rock bands as well!

I can see the involvement in spectator sports, religion or concerts as an outlet (of "tribalism" if you will).

However, I don't think it logically follows that they don't pay attention to what goes on around them. I dare say that many of the all sports people probably wouldn't be much politically active even if there were no sports. Everyone involves themselves with their local community if the need is perceived. As for more remote or ideological "needs", some don't think that far or even care.

Furthermore, I consider myself something of an intellectual, and pay a lot of attention to politics and so forth. I can also get emotionally involved with a good footie match, a great concert and so on. I dont think it blunts the edge of my intellect to do so. (Then again, would I know if it did? ;))

  • sports events began as a way to keep the people entertained... thus happy. Sort of a distraction from the drab and boring parts of life - which are plentiful. That being said, I don't think there is some sort of grand conspiracy here. The reason that sports stay around is because there is a demand, a market, and lots o' cash to be had by the people puttin' on the show (the owners, vendors, cartels ["leagues"], and others in position of authority). Plus, going to a ball game can be a real fucking nice day. Have you ever been to Wrigley Field to watch a baseball game? An afternoon game, the sun high, the clouds low, the wind blowing in from the cool waters of Lake Michigan, a few Old Style's... it is almost a religious experience!
