who makes your list? I love Van Gogh, i just love the feel of them, the vibe, the aesthetic of it all. those wavy lines and all that stuff. i love pollocks stuff as well. vermeers stuff is great as well. i like the feeling of the paintings, the way the characters feel like they are from a different era, which of course they are.

Who do you all enjoy?

On a side note, i tried drawing, with colored pencils, for the first time since grade school the other day, and really enjoyed it. just the act of trying to convey the feelings inside me, onto paper, was freeing and liberating. i noticed my work has a definite pollack influence. very abstract. i am thinking about giving painting a shot. just trying it out as well.

  • can someone help me find a specific artist. i know this is vague, really vague, but its all i have to work with, so bear with me. i remember seeing paintings, that were abstract, very black and white, and the artist used sort of the black and white of it all, to show his breakdown or his inner turmoil. i remember the paintings as being very dark and the subject matter dark. i know thats vague folks!

ohhhh...you should try prismacolors if you're going to use colored pencils. my absolute favorite to use!

my favorite contemporary artist is edwin ushiro. amazing work that he does...some of it is very haunting stuff! i believe that he is based out of la now, but originally from hawaii.

if you want to learn about newer artists, i would suggest checking out hi fructose or juxtapose magazines...great for inspiration.

Van Gogh has always been my preference, and for the same reasons. I love the mood and vibe his paintings set. A lot of the paintings in his final years are really dark.

I also happen to like Winslow Homer and his reoccuring sea theme.

the wyeth family is very interesting all artist in their own way each generation having their own style not mimicking each others creativity that in itself amazing they must have appreciated one anothers talents with each generation inspiring the next. andrew wyeths paintings are so simple, so real, everyday life & everyday moments in nature what a vision of life, a love for simplicity, a genuine artist.

Manet was my favorite growing up. I thought the Dead Toreador was the greatest painting ever.

I also fell insanely in love with the Mad magazine cartoonists - Mort Drucker, for example.

Why don't we see such great artists today?
Compared to years and years ago what is there today?

I think that sooo many things have already been done. Its hard to be inspired by a certain medium and developing something yourself that hasn't been done in the past... There comes a point when we have seen it all. I have respect for any and all talent, but agree, I am finding it hard to be passionate about any knew artists.

I tend to love anything done by the people I know personally; the fact that they possess so much great talent, floors me.

A famous Australian Artist called Russel Drysdale painted my great Uncle.

The painting sold for like $2m

Not being a great Art lover, I would say because of this, Drysdale is my favourite.

I went to her museum in Santa Fe ... great place to check out if you're ever there. Plenty of fantastic works.

The most striking piece i've ever seen in person was this ... (the jpeg does it no justice)

    543.jpg

Camille sur son lit de mort

or ... Camile on her death bed, Monet painting his wife after she had passed away. Creepy, man ... just creepy. It's at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris if you're ever over there, which doesn't get nearly enough respect with the Louvre pretty much across the street.
