JAZZFEST - Having doubts about going...

Hey...
I looked at the schedule for the festival and Pearl Jam plays from 5PM-7PM... along with all other stages going on at the same time. I am wondering if there is going to be sound interference that may affect the quality of our experience.
A friend and I are travelling from Austin TX Sat morning just to check out Pearl Jam but now we are having second thoughts. The reason above and the fact we couldn't land a room on Bourbon to enjoy the rest of the evening are making us think it is worth it.

Any fellow fans out there with Jazzfest experience? Is there reason to be worried? Why such an early time?

Thx,
pj4

I've never been to JazzFest before, but I did go to Roo back in 2008 and other various festivals for many years and this is always how they do it- but I'm sure they will have it set up to where you won't even hear any other bands while PJ is playing on the main stage.

Is everything booked for you- hotel, airfare, tickets, ect...? If it is, why pass up a chance to go see the best band in the world play for 2+ hours?

...and The Black Crowes will be there. I know I may be more interested in that...but damn dude, that festival should kick huge ass -- I'd go for sure.

    Hey, thanks for the replies...

I guess I've been used to ACL, as far as festivals go, and they usually have the headliner play on the main stage with one band at the opposite side of the park, or in PJ's case last year, by themselves as the festival headliner. It seems the site may not be that big to have ten bands going at the same time, but it may be big enough.

I wish I could see other bands (I also like The Black Crowes), but we are driving from Austin just for Pearl Jam. So we only got the Saturday pass. It is going to be a good weekend, I plan to check out Phoenix on Thursday and Dead Weather on Friday in Austin.

I've been to Orleans for the last two Mardi Gras. Stayed in Quarter this past year and year before stayed outside in Metarie(not sure of spelling) 15 minute cab ride $10 a person over a year ago. It is nice to stay in the quarter, but cabs don't cost that much to get in and out of the Quarter. Stay away from the Hurricanes and Grenades. A couple is fine, but after that they get too sweet and will ruin your next day. It should be a great time. Have fun.
I am lost, I'm no guide, but I'm by your side

Yeah, definitely do not pass up. It's New Orleans. Birthplace of the GORGEOUS BEAST (aka VITALOGY) who knows what kind of Vitalogy action you might get! Be warned though that you will not be able to get close to the rail as they have a fucked up system of mapping out the viewing area where 600-dollar ticket holders get to be up front and the regular folk like you and me can't get close. That was actually the sole reason why I decided not to go.

don't stay completely away from them- just be careful - you can't go to NO and not get a hurricane or three

Thanks for pointing that out! That makes a big difference, because there is an 8-hr drive to get there, and if we're not going to make it up close, then it might not be worth it....

Anyone looking for two day pass tix? ;)
  • I've been going to Jazzfest for the past 10 years. Don't be put off because of the "VIP section". The photo pit is about 15ft wide and the VIP area is about the same. If you get there early enough you will be able to get a choice spot on the rail. The area by the rail is standing room only. No sitting chairs, blankets, etc. I've walked up to the rail 20 minutes before Widespread panic and gotton a great view. If you got to the stage by 2:30-3 you will have a choice spot. Don't miss Jazzfest. This is one of those shows that has all the potential of being epic. Jazzfest brings out the best in almost anyone and I'm sure PJ will be ready.

Don't stay in the quarter. Overrated unless you are a fratboy and then you may really like it. Email me at smuchaway at yahoo dot com and I can help guide you to hotels within walking distance of the quarter.

  • I've been to Jazz Fest five times, and don't worry about the sound from the other stages bleeding over. If you're reasonably close to the Acura stage, you'll be fine. But plan on getting over there early to stake your claim to a good spot.

Well, I wish I knew you before! Now that I made all my plans for midwest and Northeast, no money left for Jazzfest! But yeah, I didnt tell that guy to pass it up. I was just concerned about the "rail" situation. Seriously though, from the picture on the website, it looks like the area right off the rail is closed for the vip tickets. So you're saying nobody would say anything to you if you make your way to the rail early enough even with your regular ticket? Well, then yeah, listen to this guy. Because I completely think that this is not going to be a "usual" festival setlist.
