Spring 2010 Tour: SPEED OF SOUND

edited April 2010 in The Porch
I gotta say that while I love Backspacer my biggest disappointment was with the studio version of Speed of Sound. The arrangement came out sounding contrived and messy. Mostly it's the drums that did not seem to fit to me. I do however LOVE the demo version a ton.

I feel like this song had a lot more potential and staying power when I heard the demo but now I rarely hear anyone speak of it. I'd love to revive the demo version or would even be into hearing them try out a different arrangment during the upcoming tour. Don't get me wrong, I love Just Breathe but if they need a mellow substitute that promotes BS I would vote to bring this into the fold.

Talk amongst yourselves...discuss.

The album version is the best. I think a lot of people don't think that because they spoiled themselves listening to the demo early and got used to it so the album version sounded odd to them.

It's one of the best on Backspacer. Can't wait to hear it in it's full glory this tour.

I think the album version sounds cheesy... the demo sounds great though.

I'd love to never hear the full band version again after hearing this twice in Philly! :)

i agree, def prefer the demo version, i love the acoustic guitar in this song, some great guitar work, I wish the band would have just left it alone

  • My favorite song on the album..And yes I enjoyed the demo, it sounded more like an "into the wild" track..How bout LIGHT YEARS demo....pretty damn good also..
  • Seems like there is kind of a split in opinions on this one. No matter your preference I'd love to hear more of this song in the Spring since it's has only been played live twice if you're not counting EV solo.
  • My favorite song of the new record, it kind of got lost in the shuffle with all the other events on Oct 31st in Philly, but I think this song is one of best produced recordings from the band and is definately a treat when played live. Certainly not a rocker with signature riffs, or an anthem such as Unknown thought, , but a very subtle tune, melancholy with an edge. It sounded pretty big and bassy live, with Eddie's crooning it was very special and I want to hear it many more times.
    All together now...

LOVE Speed of Sound on the record... A little taste of Beach Boys Pet Sounds with a little R.E.M. vibe thrown in.. a couple of new colors to the palet. There is more to life than "Blood" or "Black" :D

I love LIGHT YEARS demo and I hope we'll hear SPEED OF SOUND soon @ MSG cause it's a great song. I'm the one who enjoy both versions.

Least favorite song on the album, probably one of my least favorite PJ songs of all time. Which is a shame because other than Speed of Sound, it's a pretty solid album.

I like both versions but prefer the album version as we already have enough acoustic material from the boys. That why they call call themselves Pearl (JAM).

Speed Of Sound is way way way better than Johnny Guitar be it demo, full band, or silent........

Couldn't disagree more... respectfully of course :) Johnny Guitar is a great rock song! Speed Of Sound, while a good song, is somewhat of a mood killer at a live show.
