So far loving Undertow and Aenima.
Is Lateralus worth a go?
Is it similar to the two albums mentioned above.
Schism is not bad from the album but haven't heard any other songs.

Get Lateralus. I think Aenima is their best, but Lateralus is a close 2nd. It's the logical next step for them as a band and you as a listener.

Lateralus is a completely different album than Undertow and Aenima. Lateralus builds upon what they started to do with Aenima. Lateralus has so many layers that it takes multiple listens to fully understand what a masterpiece it is. Hell, nearly ten years after it was released, I still don't believe I've heard everything there is to hear on that album. It is an album that will expand your consciousness, and it was sorely needed after the events of 9/11.
  • I remember seeing Tool in 1994, small club. Still never had that rush of craziness in a crowd since, Crazy. Great band. And Maynard loves his red Bordeaux's.

Has anyone ever just let Tool's cd (the one with Sober on it) keep running after the last song has finished? I wouldn't call it a hidden track, but there is some really whack shit happening about 12 mins in. Sounds like shot gun blasts and stuff. Can't remeber exactly whats all there, its probably been 12years or so since I last heard listened to it.

you owe it to yourself if you are digging undertow to check out their ep Opiate too. some kick ass early songs of theirs that are much more like undertow then Lateralus.

    I rank them like this:
    anemia
    lateralus
    undertow
    opiate
    10,000 days
    Charlotte 00
    Charlotte 03
    Asheville 04
    Atlanta 12
    Greenville 16, Columbia 16
    Seattle 18
    Nashville 22
    Ohana Festival 24 x2
  • Dude - once you are done dissecting Tool, check out one of their peer influences, Umea's (Sweden) best and brightest --- Meshuggah --- these guys are mindblowing in terms of their technicality - especially the 3/4 drum patterns and atypical guitar riffs. Good luck scraping yourself off the floor once you are done listening to their stuff! http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=21

    Peace

i think its songs like disgustipated that piss people off. sheep bleating and maynard as a preacher and then drumming and the repitition of a couple of phrases, squealing piggy sounds along with what just sounds like adam jones guitar wanking(and i say that with love). its not gun blasts... its the sound of metal being struck and its closer to 5 mins in than 12. its all just ambient 'noise' and then the crickets kick in for a while before were regaled with a story by bill the landlord that starts it was daylight when you woke up in your ditch... just awesome stuff.

'Lateralus' is essential for any Tool enthusiast...also, get '10,000 Days' and give it some time to sink in. It's an EXCELLENT album that I think has been underrated so far...total brilliance.

How is it underrated? Virtually every song on there is a straight lift of their earlier better work. It's ok stuff, and worth a listen, but it just doesn't compare favorably to any of their other albums, including Opiate.

Aenima and Lateralus are absolute masterpieces. 10k Days is a band losing it.

"underrated" in that people don't give it due credit next to the the others...I'm hearing it differently than some other Tool fans I think. There's stuff on there that doesn't refer to any of the previous albums, like "Wings for Marie" (both parts) or "Rosetta Stoned" or "Right In Two"...I don't hear rehash or "straight lifts" on those, not even close. As for something like "Vicarious," which recalls earlier Tool, fine, it's Tool! But I don't feel like they're cannibalizing themselves or anything. I hear '10,000 Days' as a step forward, not a lateral or backwards one. Plus it's the best-sounding Tool album, sonically. Do a headphones test, I swear. But, like the music itself, that's also subjective.

Wings and Jambi are the 2 tunes that have very little in the way of repeating earlier material.

Rosetta Stoned has alotta 3rd Eye-ish parts.
Right In Two is Pushit(salival version) in different time sig.

I can play just about every song from Aenima-10k Days on guitar, so I know of what I speak.

All their albums sound great. I'm partial to Aenima, b/c it's the most "live band" sounding.

They are great but they do tend to put a lot of shit on their albums as well. Anemas definately the best, Then Lateralus. I copy tools albums onto blank cds with all the crap edited out. Then you end up with 45 - 50 minutes of good stuff.

Yeah all those tracks on Aenima annoy me, some baby crying, some letter, some German speaking dude.

my favorite album is probably undertow. it's so grungy...i don't even classify it as progressive/metal.

but yeah all of their albums are a must buy. lateralus the album is worth it just for lateralus the song.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.

try to find the show from denver on the lateralus tour, the versions of schism, the grudge, parabol/parabola, the patient....blow the album away and the drumming is just indescribable!

in fact! i will trade this plus 4 songs from dutch radio (sober, 4 degrees, intolerance and prison sex) for copies of certain shows from the riot act tour

Tool is awesome live. Got to see them during their 10,000 Days tour ina kidna small place (Tower Theater in PA). One of the best shows i've been to. Love Aenima and 10,000 DAys, Lateralus is decent as well. Undertow is pretty good. Never bought Opiate.

Any thought on James Maynard Keenan's side project- Puscifer?

I like Tool a lot. I have to be in a certain mood to listen to an album from start to finish. There are a lot of good songs and a lot of not so great songs. They're artwork is second to none though. 10,000 Days artwork with the glasses is unbelievable. Also Aenema with the hologram. Lateralus also has phenomenal artwork.

I've been a Maynard James Keenan fan for some time, specifically his work with Tool and A Perfect Circle.
    Amazing, amazing vocals.

I dunno about that. One could argue that Maynard let his hair down with APC... their albums have been overall more emotional and deeper than his Tool stuff.
