I could have sworn it was the 21st century, I think I'm off by at least a few hundred years.

(CNN) -- Amnesty International is calling on Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah to stop the execution of a Lebanese man sentenced to death for "sorcery."
In a statement released Thursday, the international rights group condemned the verdict and demanded the immediate release of Ali Hussain Sibat, former host of a popular call-in show that aired on Sheherazade, a Beirut based satellite TV channel.
According to his lawyer, Sibat, who is 48 and has five children, would predict the future on his show and give out advice to his audience.
The attorney, May El Khansa, who is in Lebanon, tells CNN her client was arrested by Saudi Arabia's religious police (known as the Mutawa'een) and charged with sorcery while visiting the country in May 2008. Sibat was in Saudi Arabia to perform the Islamic religious pilgrimage known as Umra.

I was going to write how the concept of "religious police" was just so backwards and so outlandish...and then I remember the loons trying to censor textbooks in Texas.
Still, I wouldn't be averse to long jail sentences to the producers of all those inane reality shows we're subjected to all the time

Sorcery is a genuine charge in Saudi Arabia? This sort of thing should probably not shock me, yet it does.

There something like 70 public beheadings in Saudi Arabia last year. Wonder how many were due to sorcery.

At least Christians had the decency to slowly burn them at the stake.

Allowing your State to get away with this is the crime, its the principal behind "consent of the governed" and the idea that ultimately the people have the power, whatever the structure of the State.

And notice Saudi Arabia (although it doesn't make as much money as Wall Mart) is very high on the list of US funds. You and I as taxpayers support shit like this, so in a sense we share some responsibility for this idiocy, as Americans.

Its empire, the world's first truly global empire, and its been spread primarily with dollars, through the IMF and WB, institutions from which rulers can separate themselves. Nobody seems to really know about it, but there is control in debt, especially when a state's military and police are bankrolled by US tax dollars, through institutions like the IMF and WB. Its direct control of violence, the power of the state, however indirectly the funds are distributed. And its global.

Cuz we never did anything like that. Us Americans are rightious and moral. Were god fearing people.
Give me a break. We rip on other countries for being savages yet we only look through American eyes. And then we forget Waco, we forget how many lives we've touched around the world with our awesome "smart bombs." Ya the Saudis have a fucked up government with NO democracy yet we seem to be ok with that. You don't see us "freeing" the Saudis under a brutal regime. Hmmmm, I wonder why???

If you want to go start a thread about how fucked up Waco was, go for it. I'll even post my agreement with you in there. What does the US have to do with Saudi in this case? Why get defensive, unless you too happen to agree that sorcery is a valid charge of wrongdoing?

Thats what I was going to say, why do we compare this to the United States?

Why not? If were going to pretend to be the police of the world and hold ourselves above everybody else in the world, then we shouldn't be talking shit about anybody else. We have plenty of our own problems. Now I'll do my magic and disappear like the other member.....poof/gone off to fantacy island with tatoo or whatever the fuck his name was.....
