Obama signed a bill that throws another $250 million of our tax dollars toward abstinence only sex ed.

Count me in the camp that thinks that type of education really does work, but I know there are a bunch on this site that have blasted conservatives a number of times over this issue. Apparently Obama thinks its OK to spend money on.

It was crap when the last guy did it, and crap that Obama did it...

This is from the link above:

Programs that receive this funding must "teach that abstinence from sexual activity is the only certain way to avoid out-of-wedlock pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and other associated health problems," according to the Department of Health and Human Services. To qualify, they must also teach that sex before marriage is "likely to have harmful psychological and physical effects." These are part of the "A-H definition," requirements for programs to receive abstinence funding under Title V of the Social Security Act.

what a bullshit point of view that bold part is...

    ....
Abstinence Only sex education doesn't work... whether it was President Bush... or is President Obama.
Ask Sarah Palin how that worked out in her household. If an rural, upper class, white, Christian household can't make it it work... what chance does a poor black single parent urban household have?
Abstinence as a PART of overall sex education.. then, yeah... I'm all for it. Abstinence is a viable alternative... but, let's operate in the world of reality and not negate the other options out there in favor of it.

Oh yes, the fruits of fake bipartisanship. Insert something to appease right wingers who then don't vote for it anyway.

BTW, the states with the highest rates of teen pregnancies and STDs are.... Surprise!.... States that teach abstinence only programs.

How about we do this instead: let's teach young girls (and boys for that matter) how to value and respect their sexuality, and empower and teach them to make informed choices about it?

    You're such a spin-doctor, I swear!

I love how you fail to mention that he also signed legislation providing $947.5 million for comprehensive sex ed... and how you present it as if this is what he wanted. What's he supposed to do, completely reject healthcare reform just because Congress threw in $50 million/year for abstinence-only sex ed?

Couldn't agree more! As someone who has counselled 11-16 year olds in the UK for 12 years, I am definitely an advocate for working to raise the self esteem of young people also building self respect and respect for others whilst ensuring that they are confident in making informed CHOICES.

Something is VERY wrong when a young person is more likely to partake in unprotected sex than to let someone borrow their mobile phone :(

How about we pay more attention to our young people and stop making folk devils out of them? They are criticised for their 'behaviour' and yet they are part of a society where sex, sexuality and objectification are heavily relied upon to sell, sell, sell!
