The Berlin show lands exactly on the 10 year 'anniversary' of the Roskilde tragedy - June 30th. I didn't realise until this morning when I read my emails :(

Much love and respect in advance to the the band for this show - it'll be hard.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

I would be surprised if they wouldn't play love boat captain then. LBC is high on my list of songs never heard live but dying to hear, so my fingers are already crossed.

Does this eman we're gonna hear all 'softies', like LBC etc. If so I think I might sell my tickets.

Kidding - it should be a great show...I'm getting up close for this one ;)

Has it really been 10 years already? Man. I remember that night pretty vividly still. Typical Danish summer weather - overcast and rainy, and the festival grounds was made a freaking goo. Very muddy. And there were really ALOT of people gathered in front of the Orange Stage for that show - alot of drunk people, a constant push towards the stage.

Me and my wife were right in the middle of it, but fought our way out of the worst throng after about 45 mins of the gig. Too much chaos. About 15 minutes later, the music stopped and Ed asked everyone to count to 1-2-3 and take three steps back. I still remember that look of horror and desperation on his face. And I still remember how he hunched down with tears in his eyes - for some reason that exact memory really haunts me to this day. They left the stage and most of the crowd still had no idea what was going on, until the festival leader came out a little while later and said people had been injured and killed. That's when we went home to sleep at my parents house. Came back to the festival grounds the next day, though it really was the last thing I wanted to do.

Guess I'm rambling here :p. Next time I saw the band was in Copenhagen 07, which was a powerful experience. Then London last year and now Berlin. Looking forward to it.

    Wow.... Powerful post.

I guess June 30th will be emotional for more than just the band... I didn't even begin to think about those who were there that might be in Berlin too.

I hope you have a great show. Be sound.

Ya as I said, I didn't even consider it myself until I saw your post :D. I feel most of the lingering emotions where handled with the Copenhagen gig in 2007, though. As Ed said back then, it didn't bring closure because there'll be no closure in a situation like this, but it means that our roads cross yet again and that's something to be happy about, being in that situation, and now the roads cross again in Berlin and I have to say it's gonna be awesome.

And ya know, he's absolutely right. As he said a few years back "life is fucking precious". I remember going back to the festival grounds the day after the Roskilde gig, seeing the memorial ground with the flowers, signs and banners just piling up and feeling that same sense of dread that Ed and the guys must have felt tenfold. I remember one of the last gigs of that years festival where Danish band DAD lighted torches for the victims and passed them to the audience, who then passed it down through the crowd. That was kinda beautiful and all of it reminds to always cherish life. No time to be void or save up on life is probably Eds most meaninful lyrics ever :).
I hope you have a great show. Be sound.[/quote]

Thanks, Sian :). I'm sure the show is gonna be awesome. Those gigs are always filled with emotion in the first place and even though I'm not even sure the band is going to talk about it being the 10-year day for Roskilde, I'm sure it'll be on their minds and it adds even more emotion to the show. Luckily these days, Pearl Jam fans are second-to-none in regards to looking out for each other, so I'm sure all of us will have a safe show to remember for many years! :)
